1976 — The Year in Review
JANUARY 7
▪ Hay Township and the
Village of Dashwood signed an
agreement for fire protection
following a lengthy negotiation.
• . A touring Swiss hockey
club playing exhibition games
in Western Ontario visited
Zurich and presented village
officials with a flag and book.
• Stuart Wolfe retired after
42 years with Dashwood Indust-
riPs Ltd.
JANUARY 14
... Jack McCutcheon, reeve of
Brussels and five year veteran
of Huron County council, was
named warden.
• . Herb Turkheim of .Zurich,
chairman of the Huron County
Board of Education predicted
that 1976 would be "the tough-
est year trustees have Fiad to
face".
... Zurich reeve Fred Haberer
told members of, his council at
their first meeting that "1976
is to be a year of belt -tighten-
ing" and he hoped many of the
projects that have been in the
mill for the past couple of years
will be completed for 1976.
... Mrs. Nancy Riley of Zurich
marked her 99th birthday in
good health.
JANUARY 21
... The Zurich Businessmen's
Association formed with Ron
Heimrich elected president and
Isidore Laporte vice-president.
• . The Zurich Pee Wees won
the Silver Stick B2 Champion-
ship.
. . Canada's senior women's
figure skating champion Lynn
Nightingale visited her grand-
parents in Grand Bend; Lynn
says she wishes to teach in the
future.
JANUARY 28
. . . Mr. and Mrs. Roy Consitt
of Hensall marked their 60th
wedding anniversary.
Fifty area farmers left
Huron Tractor by bus to partici-
pate in a John Deere fly -in at
two manufacturing plants in the
United States.
The Zurich Agricultural
Society decided to improve the
annual fall fair and schedule it
for July 23, 24 with Vincent
Doyle of Dashwood the new
president.
... Construction on the Hensall
sewage project was halted due
to winter conditions.
FEBRUARY 6
. . . a car driven by Howard
Hartley of Oil Springs went out
of control on Highway 21 north
of St. Joseph and crashed into
the home of Dolph Sopha.
. . . Snow has been removed
from the main street in Hensall
twice so far and the "snow
ploughed" off the sidewalks.
. . . Zurich and District Bean
Festival Inc. held its annual
meeting to begin planning for
the festival on August 23 with
Glen Thiel elected president.
FEBRUARY 11
... Area ladies are gathering to
help those less fortunate than
themselves as they quilt in the
rear of the Self Help Associates
retail store with the profits to
go to help those in under-
developed countries.
Pineridge Chalet holds its
Crippled Kids weekend for the
seventh straight year.
Zurich public school won
the district girls elementary
school basketball champion-
ship.
FEBRUARY 18
Zurich Businessmen's
Association plan a special sum-
mer promotion to lure tourists
business to the village.
. . . Reeve Fred Haberer in-
formed council the senior
citizens housing development in
the village will be moving ahead
shortly.
.. The 1976 budget presented
by the Recreation and Parks
Committee to council shows the
entire program will operate at
a deficit of only $13,000 com-
pared to $22,000 in 1974.
Public skating was can-
celled in Zurich for several
weeks as an attempt was made
to make ice time available to
Exeter hockey teams following
the closing of the Exeter arena.
FEBRUARY 25
At the Hensall Beanpot,
beans became the main item on
the menu and the rather unique
feature is drawing the appetites
of both tourists and locals.
. . . Hay Township Farmers'
Mutual Fire Insurance Com-
pany named Elmore McBride as
president at its annual meeting.
The Ontario Bean Pro-
ducers Marketing Board an-
nounced they sold 362,100
hundredweight bags of beans
at prices of $24.50 to $25.50.
... The Hensall Minor Athletic
Association is being restructur-
ed and reorganized with a new
executive.
MARCH 3
.. . Jack Riddell, Liberal MPP
for Huron -Middlesex, told
county council the closing of
hospitals in the county is set-
ting rural Ontario back 12 to
15 years while the Clinton
hospital board vice-chairman
viewed the economic impact of
the Clinton hospital closing as
monstrous.
... The Zurich pee wees reach
the W.O.A.A. "E" Champions
against Drayton.
MARCH 10
. . . At last Zurich residents
have their hydro restored after
Flyers lose to Parkhill
The Zurich Flyers lost on
Sunday to Parkhill by a score of
8 to 3, however the game was
definitely not a walk away for
the Parkhill squad.
Zurich opened the scoring in
the first period when Glen Over-
holt scored unassisted. Park-
hill came back with a goal of
their own, but Zurich was fight-
ing hard and controlling the
puck as they tucked another one
in the net before the end of the
period. This time Steve Bedour
assisted by Rick Schilbe made
the goal.
The second period turned out
to be the reverse of the first
as far as scoring went with
Parkhill scoring twice and
Atoms defeat
Exeter in
exhibition
In an exhibition game played
December 29 in the Zurich
arena, the Zurich Atoms de-
feated Exeter by a score of
4 to 0, despite a severe short-
age of players for the Zurich
squads.
Only seven players turned out
to play for Zurich. The shutout
went to Karmen Bedard who
rnade several excellent saves in
the net to secure it.
Dean Armstrong scored Zur-
ich's first goal in the first
period assisted by Mike Bed-
ard. In the second it was Rick
Kuepfer who found the target
for Zurich assisted by Gerry
Smith and Darcy Martin.
The two final Zurich goals
were scored in the third period
as Gerry Smith and Rick
Kuepfer tucked goals in behind
the Exeter goalie. Rick Kuepfer
also assisted with the goal by
Gerry Smith.
Zurich once. Once again it was
Steve Bedour who found the
net for Zurich assisted by pat
Bedard. The score at the end of
the second period was a 3 to
3 tie.
It was during the final period
of the game the Zurich Flyers
fell apart and allowed five
Parkhill goals to give them an
8 to 3 victory.
Bob Farquhar was chosen as
the most valuable player on the
Zurich team with Ernie Schlegel
most valuable player on the
Parkhill team.
