A history of resolutions
BY JANE POLLOCK
Grade 8
Hensall Public
On New Year's Eve it is
customary to make New
Year's resolutions. Some
examples may be "I resolve
to start dieting and exer-
cising" or "I resolve to stop
smoking and drinking."
Numerous resolutions are
broken, but some people with
the willpower of a new year
can stick to their promises,
New Year's resolutions
are sometimes said as a
challenge to deter -mine'
whether they can keep them
rather than just for the rising
spirit of a new year.
The best thing that could
happen to the world is if
every single person kept his
resolution to obey the golden
rule: "Do unto others as you
would have them do unto
you.,,
In medieval times most
European countries used the
Julian calendar and ob-
served New Year's Day on
March twenty-fifth called
Annunciation Day, made
their resolutions, and
celebrated as the occasion on
which it was revealed to
Mary that she would give
birth to the son of God. With
the introduction of
Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year from Isidore LaPorte
Farre it y
Dale Erb, Joan Turkheim, Dan
Meidinger.

Gregorian Calendar in 1952
Roman Catholic countries
began to celebrate New
Year's Day on January first.
Scotland accepted the
Gregorian calander in 1600;
Germany, Denmark and
Sweden about 1700 and
England in 1752.
Traditionally the day has
been observed as a religious
feast, but in modern times,
the arrival of the New Year
has also become an occasion
for spirited celebration and
the making of personal
resolutions about future
conduct.
As we near the endof
another year, let us look
ahead into the New Year,
and once again make our
resolutions to better our-
selves. Who knows maybe
everyone will succeed with
their resolutions.
The Real
Meaning Of
Christmas
A lot of people think
Christmas is just getting
present, but that's not the
real meaning of Christmas.
Christmas is a time to meet
all your family. The reason
everybody gets presents is
because they're thankful to
see you. Some relatives live
so far away you hardly ever
see them. That's why there is
a Christmas, and that is why
everybody in the whole
world should be thankful that
their family and other
families care,
