You have to be willing to spend a dollar to get a
dollar (or hopefully, two, three or four) back.
In terms of a market, it's there, in the form of
good old Lake Huron, 10 minutes away. Providing one
promotes in the right areas at the right times in the
right forms of media, you shouldn't have too much of a
problem attracting a good crowd, weather permitting.
It's a proposal that might be worth looking into.
According to the federal government, Canadians
are travelling less outside of the country and spending
more time seeing the sights which this country has to
offer,
Being of fickle mind, this writer has decided to
spend a week on the glorious slopes of Collinewood in
January and a similar period of time on the glorious
slopes of Wyoming in February.
When in doubt, find yourself a thick cushion and
have a seat on the fence.

Moments in Post Office Efficiency department: A
letter addressed to this newspaper from the Law
Reform Commission of Canada was received with the
now familiar yellow markings of the .automatic postal
sorter.
Unfortunately, the letter made its way to Ottawa
without a stamp or postage meter mark.
Another example of the post office saving
Canadians money.

Insignificant trivia of the month department: Ac-
cording to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nor-
man Johnson of the Blackpool College of Art and
Technology England holds the world record for
cucumber slicing, Johnson sliced 12 inches of a one
and a half inch cucumber into 20 slices to the inch in
24.2 seconds in September, 1973.
Christmas meeting
for Zurich WI
On Monday, the Zurich
Women's Institute held their
regular meeting, in the form
of a Christmas Party. The
hall was festively decorated
by the members of the
committee in charge who
were Mrs. V. Dinnin, Mrs. F.
Moore, Mrs. F. Kane, and
Mrs. F. Desjardine,. Mrs. V.
Dinnin acted as chair lady.
They provided a delightful
Christmas program, which
consisted of carol singing.
Dwayne Martin presented
two vocal numbers, ac-
companing himself on the
guitar, Mrs. Martin and
Dwayne also played a
musical number on piano
and guitar.
Ten little boys acted out a
Christmas comic skit en-
titled, "I want my Ma."
, Mrs. Desjardine read a
poem - "Christmas."
Gifts were exchanged
among members and guests.
The Vice-president, Mrs.
H. Hohner took charge of the
business meeting, during
which it was decided to
donate crib quilts to the War
Memorial Children's
Hospital.
As the regular meeting
falls, on New Years day the
meeting will be postponed
until the following day,
January 2. '
Mrs. L. Klopp and Mrs. H.
Hohner reported on the
Institute Board meeting held
in Hensall.
Mrs. L. Klopp will be the
new Resolutions convener
for South Huron District, and
-Mrs. Eileen Consitt will
continue as Branch
Secretary for Education and
Cultural Activities.
UCW rneet
The December U.C.W.
meeting was chaired by
Elizabeth Grainger assisted
by Ethel Msetner, Helen
Geiger and Lylian Greb. It
consisted of Christmas
readings, poems and carols.
A short skit was presented
by Donna Greb Joanne
McKinley and Karen Erb.
Special music was a solo
by Tracy Erb, a trio of Lori
Turkheim, Lori Turnbull and
Karen Steinback, a song by,
Jamie Ramer, Andrew and
Tina Grainger, a piano • solo
by Kerry Lynn Dietz and a
solo by Ruth Ann Steckle.
The program was enjoyed
by 33 members and 21
visitors.
At the end of the meeting,

The Senior Citizens
Christmas Party was held on
Wednesday and thirty- three
people enjoyed an afternoon
of card -playing and visiting.
Euchre prizes went to Mrs.
Freda Moore of Zurich for
Va,rua,
by Mary Chessell
ladies' high; Aaron Fisher of
Clinton for men's high; Mrs.
Violet Sturgeon : of Bayfield
for ladies' low; Perce
Johnston of Bayfield, men's
low. Mrs, Greta Scotchmer
of Bayfield was the lady with
the most lone hands, and Ken
Stewart of Brucefield had
the most for the men. Ken
also had the honour of being
the person who had resided
in Stanley Township for the
longest time --78 years. He
received a wreath which was
made and donated by Joyce
Dowson.
Thesix door prizes were
won by Wat Webster of
Clinton, Mrs. Irene
McClinchey of Varna, Mrs.
Dorothy Merner of Bayfield,
Mrs. Annie Finkbeiner of
Zurich, Sam Thompson of
Brucefield and Fern Baker
of Bayfield.
At the Recreation com-
mittee's November meeting,
a tentative date of the second
week of January was set for
the annual Christmas tree
burning, so please don't
dispose of your tree before
then. Watch for posters in
the village and the Varna
news for a definite date. The
next meeting will be on
January 24 at 2:00 p.m.
Stanley Township showed
its appreciation for the
services of township em-
ployees, recreation com-
mittee members and ball
coaches by treating them to
dinner and a card party on
Friday evening.
Holds beef meeting
Franklin Roth, owner of
the Varna Feed Mill, held a
Beef Feeders Meeting on
Wednesday, December 13 for
area beef farmers.
Following a dinner, which
was served by the Varna
Church Women, they
gathered at the township hall
to hear lectures by Shur -
Gain feed nutritioni and
animal health specialists,
Rev. Bruce Guy,installed the
