Seventeen members of Zion Lutheran church at- tended the Lutheran Laymen's League fall rally at St. Mathew Lutheran Local people at Royal This year's version of the Royal Winter Fair offers something for everybody, be they interested in agriculture or not. You name it and it's on ex- hibition at the Royal; from the latest (and fastest) in automotive conveyances to that chair which soothes your aching muscles. Talking about muscles be sure to wear a good pair of walking shoes as there's something like 30 acres un- der cover most of which you'll want to see. It was early Thusday mor- ning when this writer, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hern and family and Mrs, Harry Hern began the trek to the Royal. Arriving at the fair grounds a little after 9 a.m. it was amazing the number of people and amount of ac- tivity that was taking place. Heading for the coliseum we found the 4-H calf judg- ing competition had just begun with the stands about half full of spectators. Following the long hallway from the coliseum back to the cattle area found several members of the Huron 4-H contingent grooming their calves for the upcoming competition. Thursday was a special day for the 4-H and Junior farmers of province as Thursday had been designated "Youth Day" in commemoration of the Royal's fiftieth show. One individual who had a hectic schedule was MPP Jack Riddell who in addition to his parliamentary ac- tivities was helping his two daughters get ready for the competition. Riddell also was a competitor in the celebrity cow milking con- test held Thursday evening. Returning to the activities of the Huron County 4-H group, two local 4 -Hers did extremely well in their respective divisions. Marg Pym of RR 1, Cen- tralia placed third in the crossbred division while brother Brian took the top spot in the Limousin section of the calf competition. Wandering around- the Royal revealed a plethoria of exhibits, events and peo- ple. Showing once again at the Royal were Keith and Whitney Coates who had nine head competing in the market steer class. Taking a break from her teacher college studies at the University of Western Ontario was Joan Pym who was helping to man a ministry of agricultural and food booth. The gentlemen members of the media were out in full force Thursday, this the first day of the Royal, as was evidenced by the tur- nout for the free food and free refreshments at a reception honouring nine families who had exhibited at every Royal since it was opened in 1922. Also in attendance at the reception were individuals looking for some free publicity such as English ar- tist Vincent Haddelsey. "Haddelsey was at the Royal to promote to his new church, Stratford, Sunday. Mrs. Frieda Bruer, Port Credit, Mrs. Susan Snider, Bluewater Rest Home are spending some time with Mr. & Mrs. Harold Schroeder, Saturday was Mrs. Snider's 92nd birthday and a birthday supper was held with other guests Mr. & Mrs. Armin Bruer, Port Credit and Mrs. Maggie Nadiger and Helen. Callers Saturday night were -Mr, & Mrs. Melvin Stade. book "Haddelsey's Horses". Walking through the sheep barns one discovered a film crew from the CBC televi- sion program "Agriscope" filming Keith Davidson of Uxbridge, Ontario as he attended to his sheep. One of the many "characters" to be found at the Royal was 71 year old Earl Johnston of Game - bridge, a Lake Simcoe area community. Relaxing on three bales of hay in one of the sheep pens Johnston said he's been coming to the Royal since 1970 and has been showing at fairs since he was 15. He said you. run into the same `hype of people wherever you show but "the Royal is the big one". After walking what seem- ed like ten miles, seeing thousands of people and livestock and viewing hun- dreds of exhibits, the Royal is definitely the "big one". THANKS I would like to take this opportunity to ex • - press my sincere thanks for the support I received in the recent election. Especially to those who worked so loyally on my behalf. I will continue to give residents of Hay Township the same dedication in the future as I have in the past. Sincerely JOHN TINNEY HURON SANITATION Owned by John J.
