Zurich Women's Institute
held Monday. The members
of the committee in charge
were Mrs. M. McKinnon,
Mrs. A. Merner, Mrs. E.
Regier and Mrs. N. Koehler.
Mrs. M. McKinnon was
chairlady.
The meeting opened with
singing the Institute Ode and
repeating the Mary Stewart
Collect. Faith of our Fathers
was sung by the Institute
with Mrs. Wm. Ferguson at
the piano.
In keeping with Remem-
brance Day Mrs. E. Regier
read a thought filled paper
entitled Free Soldier. Mrs.
Wm. Ferguson played two
piano selections popular at
the time the men were at
war.
Mrs. McKinnon presented
a paper on Citizenship and
World Affairs. In it she told
of the responsibilities of a
citizen and how their at-
titudes towards these
responsibilities can even-
tually effect world con-
ditions.
On World Affairs we have
only to read our daily
papers. She stressed the link
between citizenship and
World Affairs.
A poem "Old Friends"
was read by Mrs. W. Neeb.
Mrs. H. Hohner, vice
president, presided over the
business portion of the
meeting during which a
donation was made to the
Family and Children Ser-
vice.
Christmas gifts are to be
exchanged at the Christmas
party in December, are all
to be home made which in-
cludes sewing, baking, hand
work, preserves etc.
Mrs. H. Hohner reported
on the County Rally held in
Londesboro, October 2
presenting valuable infor-
mation to the branch.
Highlights and more infor-
mation was given to the
group from the area conven-
tion held November 1 and 2,
by Mrs. W, Neeb and Mrs.
M. Doerr.
Miscellaneous Rumblings
— Continued from Page 4
the period from 1975 to 1978 by the anti-inflation board
concluded "that for the major Canadian food
processors and retailers, overall- net profit margins
measured by percent return on sales has varied little
from historic norms during the recent upsurge in food
prices."
The study found Canadians have changed their
food purchase patterns and that there have been three
separate influences which have contributed to the rise
in food prices.
The deterioration of the Canadian dollar has caus-
ed imported food prices to rise 15 percent since 1976,
not allowing for the normal price fluctuations.
The rise in beef prices is another factor the study
says which has caused food prices to rise.
The final factor has been adverse weather con-
ditions outside of the country with much harm being
done to the citrus fruits in the USA and the coffee crop
in Brazil.
Canadians have purchased other goods in place of
the higher priced items which could mean the food
price increase has not affected shoppers as much as
the Consumer Price Index would indicate.
Canadians should be thankful that our food prices
are still among the cheapest in the world.
