New road completed
The north road in Varna
has taken on a tidy ap-
pearance now that the
County has finished the
paving and sidewalks, and
the filling and levelling. The
sloping driveways provide
the kids with a great place to
develop their skateboarding
skills. Some pretty big kids
have been practising, too. If
gas gets too expensive to
keep the Tuckersmith
Telephone truck on the road,
they may resort to sending
Howard out on service calls
on the "board." Gravel
roads would be a problem,
though. If Sandy ever gets
both feet on the board, he'd
better not tell the church's
board of stewards, in case
they suggest he do his local
visiting that way to cut down
on mileage.

October 14. Their son John
lives in Brantford. Mr. Vos,
who has had a broiler
business, shipping 25,000
broilers four times a year,
says he has enjoyed his
twenty years here on the
farm. His friends and neigh-
bours wish them a happy
retirement, and would like to
extend a warm welcome to
the Vanderwal family.
Tony Verhoef, who lives on
the fourth of Stanley, has
purchased Aldie Mustard's
farm, and gets possession
the end of the month.
Dave and Cathy Mustard
moved into their new home
in Brucefield on Saturday.
We hope to see them around
frequently, but Cathy will be
missed in U.C.W. and the
Sunday School. Our best
wishes go with them to their
new home. -

Stanley Halloween
dance approaching
Six members of the
Recreation Committee were
present for their meeting on
September 27 in the township
hall. You may get tickets for
the Hallowe'en dance, which
is on Saturday, October 28 at
Hully Gully, from any
committee member. Tickets
are $10.00 a couple, which
includes a hot lunch, and
dress is optional. Have heard
of some people who are quite
enthused about getting into
costume for this party, so it
should be a fun night.
The closing date for en-
tries in the township crest
contest has been extended to
November 30. Stanley
township residents of any
age may submit entries to
Shirley Hill, Varna, -in a
sealed, clearly labelled
envelope.
In the fifth and final game
in the men's Slo-pitch
league, played on Tuesday,
September 19, Dashwood
edged out Varna in a very
close game. Congratulations
to the boys' peewee team and
their coach, Bill Taylor, in
winning the inter -township

Microwaves

on increase
Microwave cooking is
becoming increasingly pop-
ular these days, In 1972,
there were 12,000
microwave ovens in Cana-
dian homes. By 1977, the
numbers increased to 76,000.
Recently, Ann Thomassen,
food consultant at the Food
Advisory Division of
Agriculture Canada directed
tests on cooking chicken by
microwave. Results were
very encouraging for the
microwave oven owners.
"We compared
microwave roasted chickens
to those roasted in a regular
oven in order to determine
the roasting times needed
for the two methods and the
difference in eating
quality," explained
Thomassen.
The two products proved
to be very similar. "There
was little or no difference in
eating quality between the
microwave roasted and con-
ventional roasted chicken,"
Thomassen observed.
Roasting times, however,
were considerably less in
the microwave oven.
"It took 11 to 15 minutes
on the highest power of a 700
watt microwave oven to
roast a 2 pound bird. For a
bird, the same size, it took
about 11/4 to 11/z hours at
325°F in a regular oven."
The study concluded that
chickens can be successfully
roasted by microwave, at
quite a savings of time
without sacrificing flavor,
championship trophy.
The Lake Huron Zone of
the Ontario Recreation
Association- is holding its
annual conference in
Goderich on October 28. Its
purpose is to encourage and
provide information for
recreation committees and
anyone who is especially
interested in local
recreation. Anyone who
wishes to attend may call
Don Brodie for more in-
formation. The registration
fee is paid by the lo'al
committee.
Golden Glimpses
The trees in the bushes
surrounding us are slowly
taking their autumn colours
but the frost has not affected /
our flower gardens as yet.
Our series of films for the
winter months will be star-
ting during the middle of Oc-
tober to which the public are
invited.
We welcome Mr. Ezra
Webb to the Home. He is a
former Grand Bend resi-
dent. The donations of fruit
and vegetables to the Home
are very much appreciated.
We regret that Mrs. Ger-
trude Gittus is still a patient
in South Huron Hospital.
Euchre and shuffleboard
seem to be the main attrac-
tion these days for the
residents. However, anyone
that has any spare time to
visit would be a welcome ad-
dition to the day's activities.
Bingo was played on Fri-
day evening followed by
refreshments.
The Sunday evening
chapel service was con-
ducted by Rev. Merlin
Bender of the Conservative
Mennonite Church.
