Playground ends successful summer
By BARB DIETRICH
The Zurich Playground
has come to an end for this
year. For me, it was a very
busy summer, but a positive
experience, none the less, I
feel it was an equally
positive experience for the
children as well.
Activities were not
planned for the sole purpose
of "entertainment". The
children were given an
opportunity to be creative
and to learn in a relaxed and
casual atmosphere.
The past two weeks
rounded up the playground
activities for the summer.
Doug Debus of Zurich won
the cake in the draw, held on
Thursday, August 17th,
On Friday, some roles
were switched at the
Playground. Paul Bedard
and Paul Overholt, two
participants from the
Playground, took over
leadership duties, while
Janet and I gladly became
children for the afternoon. A
tour of ARC Industries
proved to be a very in-
teresting and worth while
experience. Later that af-
ternoon, a "mini -Olympics"
was held at the arena. I think
the boys now have a better
appreciation of what a
leadership job entails. I must
say I quite enjoyed being a
child for an afternoon.
Last Tuesday, the morning
children' took a tour of the
South Huron Veterinary
Clinic. The new building is
quite impressive. We
learned a great deal from the
"pretty vet lady" and Dr. •
Leitch. A sick dog named
Sam, could not help but
become the major at-
traction.
A total of 32 children and
mothers spent an afternoon
at the Pinery Provincial
Park, on Wednesday. On
arrival, we were niet by a
naturalist, who guided us
through a nature trail. A
brief ecological history was
given of the area and various
species of wild life were
pointed out. A swim ensured
healthy appetites for our
barbecued hot dogs.
Children took part in
swimming at Vanastra last
Thursday, for the final time.
After lunch, a Gong Show
was held at the arena. We
were pleased that Chuck
Berry could take time from
his busy schedule to be M.C.
for the event. Some per-
formers were Dr. Jeckle and
Mr. Hyde, a Crazy Violinist,
the Clowns. Bingo.,.and Bango
and A Ballet Violinist. The
act which I was in was
gonged immediately. A
birthday party took place
afterward to acknowledge
the September to June birth-
days, that could not be
celebrated at the
playground.
If you see some beautiful
children with new T -Shirts,
marking Zurich, Ont. on the
front and the child's name on
the back, you can be sure
they participated at the
playground this summer.
Thirty-eight T -Shirts were
purchased with money left
over from the Cake Draw
and Bike-a-thon.
It is good to see children
work for their money
oriented pleasures in life. I
feel the children at the
playground did an excellent
job of money raising for
special activities.

Personally, I haven't quite
decided whether an activity
such as a Hot Dog roast at
the Pinery is more satisfying
than an event such as a Gong
Show, which is very inex-
pensive and requires a great
deal of creativity to be
successful However, I am
sure that this very issue will
be with mankind, for quite
some time.
I would like to thank all
parents who co-operated
with the playground, by
driving for special events. A
special thanks must go to
Mr. Josef Risi and Mrs.
Shirley Bedard, for their
consistent contribution of the
vans. These events could not
have taken place without
your help. I know the
children really appreciated
it.
