not be criticised but the fact of the matter is that this
group is using contradictions and statements of
debatable validity.
In the press report of the board meeting,
Haverkamp was quoted as saying that the three books
which his group wanted removed, The Diviners,
Catcher in the Rye and Of Mice and Men didn't in-
struct students or improve their character. He said
education is an exchange of ideas between parents,
children and teachers to equip students with broader
views that in later life would give them a broader
ability to cope with decisions in life.
Do not the three books mentioned above give the
students a somewhat different prespective of life than
what exists in Huron and is it not more constructive to
have the students discuss these matters with a compe-
tent professional?
The other statement which this writer challenges
the "Concerned Parents" to prove is their claim that.
"as many as 80 percent of the taxpaying parents in
Huron county wish to have the three books deleted
from the list of approved books."
That's pretty big talk for a group that has little ap-
parent support south of Goderich.
On a brighter note, congratulations to trustees
Hill,Hazlitt, Wallace,Williams, Zinn and Turkheim for
standing up for what they believe is right.
Local trustee Turkheim said it best when he
stated that the books would be available to 18 year olds
and that at this age they can vote, become soldiers and
sign legal contracts but yet the board says they cannot
read the above books.
I only hope that the people of Huron come to their
senses and say to the "Concerned Parents"..."We
don't need a particular group to dicate their moral
standards to us."

THE ANNUAL MUNICIPAL
ENUMERATION
STARTS NEXT WEEK
The annual municipal enumeration will begin on Tuesday, September 5,
1978. During this month, an enumerator, carrying a proper identification
card, will call at your residence for a few minutes to check basic information
required in determining:
• your eligibility to vote in the municipal and school board elections to be
held on November 13 this year;
• the allocation of education property taxes between the public and
separate school systems;
• the distribution of provincial grants to local governments to help reduce
local tax bills;
• the preparation of jurors' lists; and
• population information needed for other municipal programs.
The enumerator must record such information as the name, age, property
status (e.g. owner or tenant), school support and residency of all members
of the household.
When the enumerator visits, please check that the information on the
Enumeration Notice is correct. If it is not, revise it and verify the changes.
If you are not home, a Notice will be left for you. If changes are necessary,
please make them and mail the Enumeration Notice, as soon as possible,
in the self addressed postage prepaid envelope accompanying the Notice.
For any additional information, please contact the local assessment office.
