Growth concerns Buyfield residents
Bayfield residents took
their reeve and council to
task Saturday over what
they consider "in-
discriminate development."
An overflow crowd at the
annual meeting of the
Bayfield ratepayers'
association demanded that
the reeve and council "fully
investigate" future
development projects, that
such projects have the full
approval of counciland that
residents be kept informed.
Residents were concerned
about the rate of growth of
new subdivisions and similar
projects and council's lack of
knowledge about the
projects.
Reeve Ed Oddliefson told
of a dredging project in the
Bayfield River. He said the
property is `Crown land and

enables retired people to
create projects of their own
choosing. It offers grants to
groups of retired who un-

benefit of themselves and
others in their community.
The accent is on local needs
as seen by older people and
on their willingness to meet
such needs.

council had no knowledge of
it until gravel -removing
work had begun.
Approval of the project, he
said, had been given by the
Ontario natural resources
ministry without council's
knowledge although the
-river bed is within village
limits.
He also said the rumo

posed to the marina plans.
Residents expressed
concern about noise and the
fear of a "trailer camp"
being .established on the
adjacent property, the south
bank, east of Highway 21
bridge.
The reeve said the
property in question was
zoned for "recreational
development" but he could
not say when the zoning had
been changed from
developmental holding.
He also explained the need
to expropriate a portion of
land to provide a third ac-
cess to a new subdivision on
the Ducharme farm.
He said the owner had
been offered a fully -serviced
lot in exchange for the
needed property but refused.
The matter will be the
subject of an Ontario
Municipal Board hearing, he
said.
Council acquired a parcel
of land due to tax arrears, he
said, and had an offer of
$80,000 for the property. He
said a village resident
moved to stop the sale. The
money had been earmarked
to pay for the village's new
fire truck and the result is a
