Children bike 14 miles
By BARB DIETRICH
At total 15 children par-
ticipated in a Bike-a-thon
through rain and shine, last
Wednesday. The 14 mile
course took place on Hay
Township sideroads in the
&ea of the Goshen St.,.
North.
On Friday, twenty
children from the afternoon
group walked to Kenneth
Gascho's farm, Ph miles
west of Zurich for a camp
out. On arrival we saw a

sign "On this property wild
life is protected to maintain
the balance of nature.
Pesticides are not necessary
if God's creations are cared
for and not destroyed." It is
a very beautiful, quiet spot
where we could enjoy the
best of nature.
We set up tents and
gathered wood for a fire.
Later that evening Janet's
mother and my mother
came to help chaperone. The
children enjoyed toasting

marshmallows, eating corn
on the cob and singing songs
around the campfire. An
11:30 curfew was easily met,
but the "eyes shut" was
another matter. It gave me
great pleasure to wake the
sleeping beauties at 7:00 on
Saturday morning. A
nourishing breakfast of hot
chocolate, juice, cereal,
burnt toast, honey and jam
soon took the chill out of our
bones. Everyone helped to
clean up the grounds and the
children and Janet walked
back to Zurich. We left the
property just as we had
found it, hoping the children
had gained added knowledge
of ecology.
This week on Tuesday mor-
ning, we had a picnic at my
parent's farm for the
children of morning
playground. Two of the
more popular events were
playing hide and seek in the
corn field and exchanging
box lunches.
Wednesday's activities
were quite unusual. We par-
ticipated in a Pioneer Day
giving tribute to our
ancestors. Each child dress-
ed in appropriate pioneer
costume. Baking Johnny
Cake, bobbing for apples and
arm wrestling proved to be,
alot of fun. However, the
children came to the conclu-
sion that they would not like
to be pioneers.
Today, we will be having ®,
our Cake Draw. The lucky
winner will find him (or
herself) with a Lemon
Pound Cake. I would like to,
thank everyone who helped
out by buying tickets.
Karen Whitmore and
Colleen Carter. staff from
A.R.C. Industries in
Dashwood, have
volunteered their services to
the playground. They will be
with us for the duration of
the program. 1
