New minister enjoys summer job
When most people think of
a summer job, images of
employment in a factory or
on a farm usually spring to
mind. While Jim Sutton may
have held some positions
similar to these in previous
years. his present summer
job could be classed as
something slightly out or the
ordinary.
His business card pretty
well tells the story; "The
Rev. J.W. Sutton, Curate,
The Church of St. Anne, Port
Franks, Ontarios".
Experience is the name •of
the game in any profession
with the ministry being no
exception and a ministerial
charge such as the Rev. Sut-
ton is helping to look after is
ideal for the gaining of some
practical experience.
The 28 year old native of
Calgary attended the'
University of Saskatchewan
at Regina and carne away
with a B.A. in psychology in
1970.
Following a number of
years in the retail manage-
ment trade plus two years as
a field executive with the
Boy Scouts of Canada in
Windsor. the Rev.. Sutton
entered the Master of
Divinity program at Huron
College, a part of the cam-
pus of the university of
Western Ontario in London.
On May 4 of this year he
was ordained as a deacon in
the Anglican church of
Canada.
This will be the third
summer that the recent
Huron college graduate has
held a summer position that
is related to his field of
study. In 1976 he spent the
summer ' at St. Michael's
hospital in Toronto while
last year he was at St.
John's church in Preston.
This year's summer posi-
tion which began on June 3
involves in the assisting of
services at St. Annes in Port
Franks. St. John -by -the -
Lake at Grand Bend, St.
Pauls in Thedford and Grace
church at Greenway.
The position will last until
September when Rev. Sut-
ton will be moving to Cam-
bridge to look after a two
point charge.
In keeping with, summer
nature of his position, he
lives in a trailer at "The
Cut", south of Grand Bend
on Highway 21, where due to
his proximity to fast food
stand.. he's developed a taste
for hot-dogs even though by
his own admission he's "a
pretty fair cook."
In terms of having a quiet
campsite around him, his
position has had varying
degrees of effects, In one in-
stance, a campsite which
had been somewhat
boiterous became somewhat
restrained when Rev. Sutton
appeared. Such was not the
case this past weekend, he
reported. with another
group of campers paying lit-
tle heed to their neighbors.
On the four church charge
which lie is presently in-
volved with, Rev. Sutton
says each congregation has
a distinct identity. At Grand
Bend there is a core con-
gregation along with
tourists who worship,.
Greenway reflects the far-
ming community which it
serves while Thedford is
combination of rural and the
small town, He said -the
most enthusiastic congrega-
tion is Port Franks where a
full time ministry has been
operative for less than two
years.
According to Rev. Sutton
"The people around here
have been very good to
me" and he is enjoying hiss
stay in this part of the coun-
try.
On the role of the church
in today's world, the oung
ininister believes that the
church should be a part of
anything that protects the
right of the individual.
He said there has been
renewed interest in the
church during the seventies.
This coincides with a return
by the church to a modern
interpretation of the values
which the church has always
held.
