HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1978-07-06, Page 10Two new tomato varieties
and one sweet corn variet3
are available this year as a
result of research by the
Horticultural Institute o
Ontario at Vineland.
Basketvee, a tomato fot
both commercial and home
gardening, is reported by
horticulturalist E.A. Kerr to
be a large -fruited, cultivar
maturing about 95 days from
mid-May seeding. Resem-
bling Veebrite in many
respects, Basketvee is 30 per
cent larger, and has a
vigorous bush -type vine with
somewhat curled leaves
allowing good penetration of
sunlight and early maturing.
Fruits are smooth, thick -
fleshed, firm, crack
resistant and have excellent
holding ability both on the
vine and after harvest. The
new cultivar is also highly
resistant to verticillium wilt,
the main root disease of
tomatoes in Ontario.
Veepick is a large pear-
shaped paste tomato with
exceptionally good flavor
which has already proved
popular with consumers and
growers, especially for pick -
your -own operations. Dr.
Kerr says Veepick is larger
than traditional past
cultivars such as Roma and
rates higher in crack
resistance, flesh thickness,
internal color and flavor. Its
holding ability is excellent
and it is resistant to both
verticillium and fusarium
wilts. Vee pick, although
firm enough for bulk han-
dling, is generally not firm
enough for machine har-
vesting.
The new sweet corn
variety, Flavorvee, is a late
season corn with excellent
flavor, texture and holding
ability. Maturing in about 95
days from seeding in mid-
May at Simcoe, Flavorvee is
exceptionally vigorous with
a tendency to produce two
good ears per plant. Ears are
eight inches long and have 14
to 18 rows. Husks are dark
green and cover the tips well
for protection from birds.
Flavoree retains its flavor
and appearance when frozen
as whole kernel and shows
promise for commercial
whole ear freezing. Seed
supplies were limited this
year and purchased mainly
by growers for sales through
roadside markets and pick -
your -own operations. Sup-
plies are expected to be
'-' ample in 1979."
Livestock meat
prices will rise
Livestock and meat prices
will continue rising during
1978. Upward price
pressures are suggested by
prospects for only a slight
increase in hog slaughter,
smaller beef supplies, and
continued strong consumer
demand for meat. Supplies
of poultry will expand, but
prices will follow the trend
of other meats.
Pork production in 1978
may be up only 2 to 3 percent
— somehwat lower than
earlier expectations. First
quarter pork production ran
slightly below a year
earlier. However, a 2 to 4
percent increase in pork out-
put this spring and summer
seems likely based on the
March 1 inventory of market
hogs. Fourth quarter hog
slaughter could be about the
same or slightly above that
of last fall. Beef production
for the year may be 3 to 5
percent less than in 1977.
Combined with the slight in-
crease in pork output and
the expected expansion in.
poultry, total red meat and
poultry supplies for 1978 are
expected to be about un-
changed from last year.
