Fencing will
save money
Most farmers don't like
fences anymore than their
animals. Farmers can't es-
cape fence costs, and the
animals can't escape to
greener pastures.
But Ralph Macartney, ex-
tension beef specialist for
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, is
recommending a new type
of fencing for farmers who
want to save money.
Suspension fences, tested
at the roughland pasture
area of .Elora Research Cen-
tre near Guelph, do an effec-
tive job of keeping cattle
confined at about half the
cost of conventional page
wire fencing.
The suspension fence is
constructed of four lines of
single -strand barbed wire on
widely -spaced posts. Spiral
wire stays are placed along
the fence to maintain the
correct spacing between
wires. ..
The financial saving is in
the reduced number of,posts
required. Mr. Macartney
says posts can be spaced up
to 40 metres apart, depen-
ding on the contour of the
land. Wire stays are placed
about every seven metres.
The reduced number of
fence posts has an added ad-
vantage of reducing the time
required to erect the fence.
Suspension fences erected
at the roughland research
pasture held up well after
the winter. The fences are
ideal for areas with a snow
problem, because the stays
can be taken off to lower the
wires.
Mr. Macartney says he
prefers the suspension fen-
cing over the conventional
page wire fences because
cattle won't rub against the
barbed wire.
