Area girl enjoys singing
It's a Saturday night in
Dashwood and the
Bluewater Playboys are
doing something that they'll
quite likely be doing for the
rest of the weekends left in
the year: keeping the
dancers and listeners of their
particular brand of music
happy.
This is what you would call
your typical wedding
reception; a lot of happy
people out to have a good
time. It doesn't matter who
you run into everyone has a
smile on their face.
Meanwhile back on the
stage, the Playboys continue
to play, with a slightly higher
voice noticeable on the
backing harmonies. This
might not be considered out
of the ordinary except for the
fact that the voice belongs to
Brenda Creces, 15, a Grade
10 student at South Huron
District High School in
Exeter and who lives at RR.

This Saturday evening,
Brenda remains in the
background partially hidden
by band leader Ken
Ducharme, another member
of the band and her large
acoustic guitar.
It was combination of love
for singing and the gift of
a guitar at age 11 that saw
Brenda begin singing
professionally at age 13.
Following some ap-
pearances at the local fairs,
Brenda began playing with
the duo of Roy McAdams and
Helen Duguay in 1976. After
their departure on a Canada
wide tour, the young vocalist
began playing with the
Playboys.
In addition to possessing a
crystal clear voice and a
command of the guitar,
Brenda also plays bass and
the piano. She said she would

Song -writing is another
pursuit of Brenda's with the
young songwriter having no
idea of the number of songs
which she has written.
"Song -writing is
something you can't force
, .. It just happens every
once in a while," she said.
Asked if the recent
secondary teachers' strike
had helped her song writing,
she replied with a touch of a
smile sneaking through, that
it had.
Of the songs which she has
written, Brenda is the only
person to have performed
them. She hopes to record
some of her songs this year.
The Dashwood area
youngster paid tribute to
McAdams for providing the
necessary push and
guidance early in her career.
When she was 11,
McAdams said "I'm going to
take you places."
Brenda figures to get into
showbusiness full time after
completing grade 11. She will
be 17 and have about three
years professional ex-
perience when she goes on
the road.
"I hope to get a chance to
go on the road for a little
while," she says, adding that
if she doesn't like it after a
year, she can return to her
education.
"I'd like to get a chance to
be playing every day; I'd
like to try it."
One of the things that she
believed has helped advance
her career is yodelling. A
song which Helen of "You
and Me" performs is on
Brenda's repertoire.
When asked if she would
consider performing as a
solo act, she replied no and
said she enjoyed having a
backup group such as "You
and Me,"
"I guess I got spoiled that
way," she said.
She enjoys singing and
listening to all types of music
and also enjoys painting.
When not singing this
summer, she will be working
with her father Gene, who is
a signmaker and sign
painter.
Back at the reception, the
band continues to play and
the music finds its way
outside of the Dashwood
Community Centre.
It's Brenda's turn to
perform the lead vocals and
after each song, applause
can be heard from the
crowd.
A few years down the road,
the applause should continue
but it might be in locals
somewhat remote from
Dashwood.
