There were over one hundred in attendance to be entertained by Mr. & Mrs. Earl Heywood of Wingham, represent about 25 Huron County social service agen- cies working together on common problems. While the group, a sub- committee of the Huron County special needs com- mittee, gave high priority to such needs as increased ac- commodation and transpor- tation for the physically han- dicapped, the problems of senior citizens went to the top of the list. Provincial statistics in- dicate that last year 13.7 per cent of the county's residents were senior citizens, compared with the provincial average of 8.6 per cent. County housing authority manager John Lyndon said that once senior citizens can no longer care for themselves, they must move out of subsidized apartments, often into nur- sing homes. And that, he said, means a cost increase from $150 a month for apartmeht rent to $400 or $500 for nursing home care. Many, he said, could stay put in their apartments if they had someone to help with simple things such as cleaning and bathing — or just talking.
