defeated Huron Park 6-4.
A total of 35 games were
played by the local boys; 16
games ended in victory
along with 17 losses and 2
ties. The boys failed to win
any trophies, but didn't fail
in their effort to try. The
Pee Wees played in their
regular league, then entered
the W.O.A.A. playoffs. The
boys were knocked out early
as they lost to Grand Bend
two games to one.
The remaining hockey

Regions established to
aid in disease control
New regulations come
into effect on April 1, 1978,
that will enable the Health
of Animals Branch of
Agriculture Canada to
accelerate its campaign to
eradicate brucellosis from
Canadian cattle herds.
Under the new
regulations, Canada will be
classified into three types of
regions in accordance with
the level of infection
present:
1. Brucellosis -Free —
Nfld., P.E.I., N.B. 2.
Brucellosis Low -Incidence
— N.S., Man., B.C., Sask.,
Alta. 3. Non -Designated —
Que., Ont.
Basically, the new
regulations, and how they
effect the livestock owner,
involve strict control on
movement of cattle into
regions (provinces) with

lower levels of 'infection
than that which exists in
their home areas. For in-
stance, cattle moving from
a non -designated area to one
of low -incidence, or from a
low -incidence area to a
brucellosis -free region,
would all require blood -
testing prior to movement.
Animals from brucellosis -
free lilted herds will be ex-
empt, as well as some
animals which will be ex-
empted because of age,
breeding capability or vac-
cination status. These latter
exemptions would naturally
change based on the type of
herd and region_from which
they originated as well as to
the type of herd and region
to which they are moving.
In non -designated regions
(provinces), such as Ontario
and Quebec, most cattle also
require testing prior to
movement to another farm,
public sale, auction or,
market of livestock, or to a
show or exhibition within
these two provinces. Ex-
empt from this testing re-
quirement will be cattle
from brucellosis -free listed
herds, dairy cattle less than
18 months of age, beef cattle
less than 24 months of age,
cattle for immediate
slaughter, steers and spayed
heifers.
In all instances in which
animals require a test prior
to movement, particularly
in Ontario and Quebec, on
the farm blood testing must
be conducted by an ac-
credited veterinarian or his
technician, at the expense of
the animal owner. The test
will be carried out by either
a provincial (Ontario and
Quebec only) or Federal (all
provinces) laboratory.
National statistics for the
period ending February 28,
1978 showed that 863 herds
were under quarantine in
Canada. Brucellosis Free
Regions — 2 herds;
Brucellosis Low -Incidence
— 144 herds; and non-
designated — 717 herds,
Huron County had 11 herds
under quarantine as of
March 23, 1978.
When a blood test is re-
quired for cattle movement,
the blood test results must
accompany the animal when
it is moved. Owners who
don't abide by these new
regulations run the risk of
forfeiting government com-
pensation for cattle found to
be infected with brucellosis,
and also may be prosecuted
under the Animal Disease
and Protection Act.

Soil test
worthwhile
Home gardeners often
spend considerable amounts
of money on various kinds of
fertilizer. Much of this
money may be wasted, if
nothing has been done to
determine the actual needs
of garden soil.
A soil test is a small,
worthwhile investment,
says Theo Blom, extension
horticulturist with the On-
tario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food at
Vineland Station.
"For a fee of one dollar
per sample, the soil -testing
laboratory at the University
of Guelph will check levels
of phosphorus, potassium,
calcium,magnesium and soil
pH, and recommend fer-
tilizer requirements."
Special boxes for soil
samples are provided by the
Department of Land
Resource Science at the
University of Guelph and by
county agricultural offices.
Mr. Blom recommends
taking a total of four or five
samples from different
parts of the garden. These
samples should be well mix-
ed before being sent to
Guelph.
If separate, widely -spaced
plots are to be cultivated,
separate samples should be
taken from each plot. Fees
must be included with soil
samples.
