Watch for
metrification
When grocery shopping,
you've probably noticed that
certain food products have
been converted to metric
sizes. The food specialists at
the Ontario Food Council,
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, point out that by 1980
all products will be in
metric. Keep this in mind as
you see conversion take
place.
During the conversion
process, two terms will be
used — hard and soft conver-
sion. Let's relate these
terms to actual products.
Ice cream is now available
in containers marked 4L, 2L,
1L, or 500 mL. Ice cream has
undergone hard conversion.
That is, new containers giv-
ing only the metric unit of
measure have been produc-
ed. On the other hand, some
products are marked in both
metric and imperial units of
size. A can of tomatoes will
have two markings on the
label, for example 19 ounces
and 540 mL, or 28 ounces and
796 mL. Any product that
has both the metric and im-
perial units of measure on it
has undergone soft conver-
sion.
Eventually most products
will undergo hard conver-
sion. Ice cream has been
completely converted and
dairy products are in the
process of going metric,
Sugar has undergone hard
conversion and now will be
found in 4 kg, 2 kg, 1 kg and
500 g sizes. Bread, cereals,
salt and Canadian wines are
undergoing or have un-
dergone conversion.
It won't take long before
we find ourselves quite ac-
customed to the metric
system as it comes to be
used around us more often.

Consumer aided
by index
The Farmer Price Index
(FPI), a new program to
help consumers understand
what is happening to their
food dollar, . was announced
Monday by Peter Hannam,
President of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture.
Speaking at a news con-
ference at OFA offices, Mr.
Hannam said, each month
the OFA will be releasing
the FPI to show what the
farmer gets. Because it is
based on the same formula
as the Consumer Price
Index, consumers can com-
pare the two and determine
why prices are changing.
Mr. Hannam explained,
there is a real need for a
better educated public in
these days of inflation and
economic difficulties, Con-
sumers look at prices on the
shelf and find them in-
creasing every month. Yet
the incomes of the farmzrs
who produce this food are
steadily declining. Con-
sumers need to know why.
"Statistics Canada should
be producing these com-
parisons, but they are not",
said Mr. Hannam. "We
farmers have therefore
taken it upon ourselves to
provide this much needed in-
formation."
Mr. Hannam pointed out
that in the year ending
February, 1978, the Farmer
Price Index has increased
by 12.8 percent. It is ex-
pected, the March Con-
sumer Price Index for food
will be up by 17 or 18 per-
cent.
On the other hand, prices
for Ontario and Canadian
farm products showed con-
siderable price moderation.
For example, prices to the
farmer on dairy products
were up only 8.8 percent.
Poultry was up 4.2 percent.
Eggs were down 3.4 percent.
And with the exception of
apples, whose price has been
floated, the negotiated price
for processing fruits and
vegetables declined from
the previous year.
The year.to year increase
for beef was 19.2 percent to
the farmer and 33.1 percent
to the consumer. By con-
trast, pork prices for the
farmer rose 27.9 percent
while consumer prices rose
only 15.3 percent.
Stanley receives
$1750 grant
Stanley Township will
receive an Ontario grant of
$1,750 to aid in further
development work in the
township's municipal park.
The municipality plans to
carry out the removal of
brush, construct walkways
and undertake other minor
development work.
Natural Resources
Minister Frank S, Miller ap-
proved the. grant today and
said that provincial grants
amounting to $23,837 have
been awarded toward land
purchase, construction of a
picnic pavilion, water supp-
ly, perimeter fencing, and
picnic and beach access
facilities.
The approved park com-
prises some six acres of land
with a 617 -foot frontage on
Lake Huron. It is situated in
Stanley Township, one mile
south of Bayfield, three-
quarters of a anile west of
Highway 21.
