Society offers
many services
The Ontario Society for
Crippled Children is a volun-
tary organization created in
1922 to bring together in a
provincial association what
has now become 235 Easter
Seal Service clubs in Ontario
whose 10,000 members have
chosen service to physically
handicapped children as
their form of community ef-
fort.
As a private charitable
organization, it offers
parents the services that
they and their children will
need if they are to build a
brighter future of hope and
opportunity for their
children.
Services currently provid-
ed by the Society to 8,000
children are as follows
A consultative nursing
service by 40 registered
nurses with public health
and rehabilitation nursing
training and experience bas-
ed in 22 district offices
across Ontario.
A two-week camping holi-
day for more than 1000
youngsters over the age of
seven at five Society owned
and operated camps. The
Society also encourages and
supports community recrea-
tion programs for han-
dicapped children sponsored
by municipal recreation
departments or by, com-
munity groups.
The Society operates
Variety Village Electro
Limb Production Centre
which manufactures
prosthetic and orthotic com-
ponents such as powered
elbow joints and hands,
special bracing and other ar-
tificial devices. These parts
may then be incorporated in
any standard artificial limb
anywhere in the world.
The Society will help
parents if financial
assistance is needed to ob-
tain artificial limbs, braces,
wheelchairs or other aids. In
addition, wheelchairs or
other aids required only for
a short .period can be
supplied from the Society's
Loan Cupboard.
Diagnostic and consultant
clinics are sponsored an-
nually by the Society in the
remoter areas of tffe
province by request. Each
year, some 2000 children are
examined by specialists
whose findings are reported
to the family doctor.
The Society has been in-
strumental in helping to
create treatment centres.
At present there are 16
children's rehabilitation
centres throughout Ontario,
including the Ontario Crippl-
ed Childrens Centre in
Toronto which was created
by the Society in 1962 to
serve the Metropolitan area
as well as act as a provincial
centre for children with
special needs.
Through the Conn Smythe
Research Foundation for
Crippled Children, the Socie-
ty sponsors basic and
clinical research into crippl-
ing disorders in children,
preventive measures and
new treatment teachniques.
The Society also ad-

government's program of
financial assistance towards
the cost of drugs and equip-
