Mental illness is treatable ay PAT WRIGHT Mental retardation is a below average rate of in- tellectual development, dif- ficulty in learning and func- tioning socially. Physical disabilities may or may not be present. Mental retardation cannot be cured, but it can be prevented in many in- stances. Generally, people who are mentally ill have developed normally in every way. Men- tal illness .can be treated successfully and is not con- sidered incurable to -day. Few cases of mental retardation are inherited. This and other developmen- tal disabilities can occur during pregnancy, during birth, or in early childhood years. There are over 200 causes known. Some causes are still unknown, The important thing is that many of the causes we know about are preventable to -day. Three out of every 100 babies born each year will be retarded. That is why South Huron and District Association for the Mentally Retarded is developing ' a prevention program for this area. The committee has just begun working on the program. The public can ex- pect to hear more about it later in the spring.
