An unsuccessful break-in oc-
curred at the Tasty -Nu Bakery.
Councilors Isidore Laporte and
Ray McKinnon planted a red,
maple beside the village office in
commemeration of Canada's
110th birthday.
Prompt action by the Hensall
fire department was credited
with containing a fire at the
home of John Gardiner, just out-
side of the village,
Milvena Erickson resigned
from Bayfield council.
July 13
The fund raising objective for
the Hensall arena was pushed
higher despite a council resolu-
tion to accept the lowest bon-
dable tender, said fund chairman
Eric Luther.
Citizen's News editor Cathy
McKinley, announced her
resignation with Margaret
Rodger of Granton to take over
Ms. McKinley's position.
July 20
It was announced that the
Zurich Community Centre would
have additional dressing room
and storage space for the up-
coming season.
The improved financial picture
of the Zurich Hydro system
allowed the committee of council
in charge of the system to find it
unnecessary to take out a $20,000
debenture for payment of the
new bucket -truck.
July 27
The annual Zurich Fair proved
to be most successful as fine
weather and double the previous
year's attendance were the
highlights. Queen of the Fair was
Mary Jane McGregor of Hensall.

Quick action by Bayfield
firemen and neighbours saved a
barn on the property of John
Campbell as hay began to
smoulder.
Zurich fire fighters were also
• busy as they assisted in the
rescue of two people from an
overturned sailing craft.
Gerard Andre Charrette son of
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Charrette
graduated with an honours
degree in French from the
University of Western Ontario.
August 10
While Stanley township gave
their approval to fill -line maps
as proposed by the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority,
Zurich council withheld approval
feeling that one regulation as
proposed would be more of a
hinderance than a help.
Canada's metric conversion hit
Zurich and area in a concrete
way as road signs were being
changed from miles per hour to
kilometres per hour.
August. 7
Maplewoods Shuffleboard Club
was awarded a New Horizons
grant of $4,051 to be used towards
the construction of a
shuffleboard court and barbecue
pit.
Sharon Baker of RR 2
Dashwood was named Zurich's
new clerk and tax collector
replacing Betty Oke.
August 24
The board of directors of South
Huron Hospital decided to "go it
alone" with a $500,000 addition.
The finances would be provided
from accumulated board sur-
pluses and funds from the coun-
ty.
August 31
The 12th annual Zurich Bean
Festival proved to be a runaway
success with close to 15,000 peo-
ple in attendance. Tammy Baker
• of Hensel' was named the Bean
Queen.
The keys for the new senior's
• apartments were turned over to
John Lyndon, manager of the
Huron County housing authority
by Zurich contractor J.P.
Ducharme.
September 7
The 12th annual Bayfield Fair
was all that a rural fair should be
as large crowds enjoyed the fine
weather and interesting exhibits.
Testing along township roads
continued as Shell 011 was engag-
ed in seismic testing for oil and
gas desposits,

Construction of the new Hen-
na arena began as an official
sod turning ceremony was held.
