The residents of Stanley township faced an increase of 10.2 mills. in their taxes as the 1977 budget was struck. Hay council announced that they intended to resurface two and one half miles of the Goshen north of Zurich. April 20 A flat rate of $10 was an- nounced as the cost of securing a demolition permit within the village. The rate was kept low as council did not wish to dis- courage anyone from tearing down outdated buildings. The Flyers were the grand champions of the Zurich recreational hockey league. John Consitt, Zurich, Secretary -Manager of the Hay Township Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company was named President of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association for 1977- 78. April 27 The Huron -Middlesex Progressive Conservative Association was chastized by Minister of Colleges and Univer- sities Harry Parrot for not hav- ing nominated a candidate for the possible spring election. Mayo Huron County Council decided to permit seismic testing for oil and natural gas along county road rights of way after hearing it may have no right to refuse. The new Hensall Medical Cen- tre operated jointly by Drs. Wallace and O'Connor ex- perienced no lack of visitors following its first day of opera- tion. Bowlers from as far as Strat- ford took part in a very successful bowling tournament held in the Town and Country Bowling Lanes. Liberal leader Stuart Smith told the annual meeting of the Huron -Middlesex Liberal Association that a spring elec- tion would be a needless waste of money. May 11 A dinner meeting of the Zurich and district Chamber of Commerce heard William Met- calfe of Ontario Hydro defend Hydro's advertising policies of years previous which en- couraged the use of energy. Reeve Harold Knight of Hen- sall announced that the contract for the construction of the new Hensall arena would be let soon. A need for six rent -geared -to - income housing units for the area surrounding and including Hen- sall was established by the Ministry of Housing in a report released to Hensall council. Heavy winds wrecked havoc with the onion crop especially in the Thedford-Grand Bend area, according to Stan Pachlarz one of the farmers in the area affected. May 18 The County Board of Educa- tion levy was the villain as Zurich residents were faced with a 10.06 mill increase over last year. Things were getting warm on the political front as all three major parties named their can- didates for the provincial elec- tion. Incumbent Jack Riddell was unopposed at the Liberal nomination while the P.C.'s finally persuaded Anson McKinley to be their candidate. Shirley Weary of Goderich was acclaimed as the NDP represen- tative. Zurich council passed a bylaw for the establishment of a Com- mittee of Adjustment. Paul Klopp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Klopp graduated from the Centralia College of Agricultural Technology. May 25 Reeve Ed Oddleifson of Bayfield announced that the community had decided to con- struct a new arena at a cost of around $400,000 instead of repair- ing the existing structure. The two major parties seem convinced that one of the ways to get through to the voter was via his stomach as the Liberals and Conservatives scheduled several food -oriented outings. Former moderator of the United Church of Canada, Dr. Robert McClure addressed the congregation of Hensall United Church. June 1 You could tell that the election was getting closer by the number of potshots that the candidates were taking at each other. While Liberal Jack Riddell deplored the spending practices of the pre- sent government, Premier William Davis accused Riddell of not leveling with the voters of the riding about regional govern- ment. At thespring convocation of the University of Guelph, Don Noakes of Hensall was awarded the Association of Professional Engineers Medal and the Ontario Agricultural College Alumni Award. The Meals on Wheels program was begun in Zurich. The pur- pose of the program is to allow elderly residents of the village a break from preparing their own meals. While all candidates agreed that the election was a tough one, sparks flew at an all candidates meeting at South Huron District Huron School as Anson McKinley and Jack Riddell debated about who had the most to do in preven- ting the closing of the Clinton hospital. June 15 Liberal incumbent Jack Riddell rode to victory easily in Huron -Middlesex despite a tough race with Conservative Anson McKinley. Riddell increased his majority from the 1975 election by 92 votes with 3,871 votes separating McKinley and Riddell. The parishoners of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church at St. Joseph honoured one of its former priests, Monsignor Bourdeau for his fifty years as a Priest. June 22 The Hensall and District Com- munity Fund received a big boost when W.G. Thompson and Sons turned over a cheque of $25,000 to the fund. Wage disagreement and better job offer led to the resignation of Hensall Clerk Bob Hiel. The new veterinary clinic at the east end of the village was nearing completion. June 29 Hay council had to change their plans to resurface the four miles of the Goshen as Transpor- tation and Communication of- ficials indicated that the road base was insufficient for paving. The Hensall Arena Fund con- tinued to climb as over $51,000 had been collected. At the Huron -Perth Separate School track meet, Dereck McKinnon of St. Boniface tied for first in the junior boys divi- sion.
