Turkheim was unopposed. William Watson retired after 20 years of school bus driving. The Zurich bantams won their division at the Watford Silver Stick hockey tournament. Jan. 12 Two Zurich area brothers died within three hours of each other as former reeve of Hay township Joseph Hoffman and Anthony Jerome Hoffman passed away. At Zurich council's inaugural meeting, reeve Fred Haberer ex- pressed the hope that the momentum of work completed in the past two years would con- tinue into the following years. Reeve Jack Tinney of Hay township announced that road improvement would be one of the township's priorities for the year 1977. Jan. 19 A Hensall woman sustained serious injuries following a two car crash south of Centralia. Mrs. Donald Beck was a passenger in a car driven by her husband which collided with another vehicle during poor weather conditions. An Ontario Municipal Board hearing into a proposed 100 acre cottage subdivision south of Bayfield may be delayed due to negligence on behalf of the applicants. The Hensall arena board was "working up to a decision" con- cerning whether to repair the ex- isting arena or build a new one according to chairman Wayne Reid. Zurich volunteer firemen Hubert Schilbe and Eugene O'Brien received trophies to commemorate 29 and 10 years of service to the community. Feb. 2 Zurich and area was inundated with large amounts of snow as one of the harshest winters on memory continued. Doug Erb the local petroleum dealer was kept busy following snow plows as attempts were made to keep isolated farms in oil. Robert Westlake of the Westlake Am- bulance Service reported that his ambulance had been extremely busy during the bad weather as "ambulances are used in less than essential cases due to the safety factor." On an optimistic note Stanley township clerk Mel Graham said that "the roads of Stanley township are still there and as long as you stay off them they are OK." Feb. 9 The winter's frequent storms wrecked havoc with village and township road budgets. Less than 10 percent of the 2,- 000 people who usually purchase their car license plates at Zurich had done so by this time last year. Hay township signed the finalized fire agreement with Dashwood with several changes being made. Feb. 16 Hensall village council and the Parks Board approved the authorization of construction of a new arena -hall. Reeve Fred Haberer informed the Zurich Community Centre Board that cost-sharing between Zurich and the surrounding municipalities for use of the arena may become a reality. All employees of the municipality of Zurich received an eight percent salary increase but the remuneration for council members remained the same. March 2 William Given who started Trillium Yachts in Zurich was killed in a two car accident west of Exeter. Bill Case was named manager of the Zurich branch of the Bank of Montreal. At the annual meeting of the Hay Township Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company retiring president Elmore McBride reported the company continued to maintain a steady pattern of growth during 1976. March 9 An exhaustive autopsy has determined that murder suspect Floyd Wein, 64, died by drowning in a 43 foot well on his Dashwood property. In an attempt to off set some of increased costs of snow removal, Zurich council applied to the province for a $600 grant. The Zurich novices were the winners of a four team WOAA playoff tournament held in Bayfield. March 16 Zurich has its work cut out to try and encourage industry and tourism growth in the area said Spence Cummings, Development Officer for Huron county at the March meeting of the Zurich Chamber of Commerce. The Zurich Community Centre Fund continued to grow as almost $37,000 had been collected. March 23 It was learned at the annual meeting of the board of directors of the Bluewater Rest Home that the home ran at an occupancy rate of 99.6 percent for the previous year. Residents of Stanley Township are concerned about future ur- ban and recreation development in its farmlands according to the first of series of workshops that was held in conjunction with the proposed secondary plan. The Zurich bantams were the winners of the WOAA Bantam "D" trophy. March 30 The Shipka Community Centre made a donation of $500 to ARC Industries of Dashwood for the purchase of wood working and silk screening equipment. Ruslan Gani of Bangledesh began a visit to Zurich to study Canadian marketing techniques, April 6 Seven students of Zurich Public School won prizes in a poster and essay competition sponsored by the Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority. The Hensall and District Com- munity Centre Fund Raising Committee determined that $150,000 would have to be raised by the community. April 13 The Zurich Chamber of Commerce was told it is a declin- ing breed by Gordon Hill, past president of the Ontario Federa- tion of Agriculture. Hill stated that "all the advantages have gone to big operators whether farmers or businessmen and it is going to be increasingly difficult for small businessmen to operate in the years ahead."
