Zurich Citizens News, 1974-12-23, Page 3MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1974 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS PA G E 3 Directory assistance If you can't be bothered looking up a telephone number and take the easy way out by asking information you can expect a bill for the service after February 9, 1975. Bell Telephone has instigated` a new charge for thedirectory assistance service for those customers that use it so they do not have to go through the bother of getting out the tele- phone book. The charge is 25 cents per telephone number given that is listed in the telephone directory The charge will be added to the monthly bill only if the res- ident customer requests more than three numbers in a month that are listed in his or her telephone book. The move was made by Bell to cut down the increasingly high volume of unnecessary calls. Directory Assistance oper- ators handled more than 220 million calls in 1973, 70 per- cent of which were listed in the phone book. The company hopes to provide a quality assist- ance service for those custom- ers who need it for numbers not listed in the book or for those who prefer the operator to look up the number for them. By charging individual custom ers on their use of the service the Company hopcs to have the customers who use the service the most, hear the brunt of the expenses. Surveys done indicate that about 50 percent of the calls to directory assistance are made by only 10 percent of the customers. Not all calls to the operator will cost you money. The first three a month are free as well as calls about numbers not list- ed in the directory, calls from hospital, hotel or motel rooms and emergency calls. People calling directory assistance from a pay phone will not be charged nor will calls made about long distance numbers that are not listed, be charged. People with physical or men- tal handicaps will be exempt from the minor charge. Senior citizens over the age of 65 will also be granted free service.
