Zurich Flyers take first place (by Paul Charrctte) On Thursday night -the Zurich Flyers travelled to 1luron Park where they out -skated , out - hustled and out -scored the College team 8-1. The Flyers had a combination of good passing, good goaltending, and good penalty killing, as they were two men short four different titues throughout tate game. It was 4-0 after one, 5-0 after the second and of course the final 8-1. The line of Desjardine, Overholt and Bed- ard accounted for five goals as Glen Overholt maintained his two -goal a game average by recording his second hat - trick of the season with one goal coming while Zurich was a Tuan short. Pat Bedard at left wing, scored two goals while Ron Desjardine drew three ass- ists. Richard Schilbe scored two big goals for Zurich With .lite Ratner and Kevin Nlc1<innon drawing the assists. Zurich's last goal was by Ron Rader who oututanouvered the College goaltender on a penalty shot. The lone College goal was a disputed one by Charlie Bow - roan, spoiling Percy Bedard's bid for a shut -out. Bedard playec a standout game in goal for the Flyers as he displayed his quick reflexes, foilittg the College shooters as he stopped 30 shots. Coach Bobby Merner ment- ioned the defensive play of Jim. Ratner and Bob Farquhar. Zurich drew 40 of the 60 min- utes in penalties handed out and shot 33 times at the College goaltender. On Sunday afternoon the Zur- ich Flyers tool< sole possession of first place as they edged the Exeter \loha wl<s 0-5. Pat Bedard was the big gun for Zurich as he scored a goal in each period. With only three seconds left in the second Al Rimener tied it up with •jun Pfaff drawing the assist. Bedard's second goal carne at 2:58 of the second period from Glen Overholt. Zurich were ahead 3-1 on a goal by Ron Desjardine from Overholt. Brad Datars made it 3-2 as he scored on a set-up from Mike Cuslunan, The third period was only 25 seconds old when Cushman scored from a face-off deep in the Flyers end. The Mohawks took the lead at a:35 with Jacl< Glover scoring from Randy Tiernan and Larry Willert. Zurich came to life at the 10 -minute utarl< as Dick Bedard, Pat Bedard and Rick Schilbe scored to give the Flyers a two -goal lead. With only 1:10 left in the game Mike Cushman brought Exeter to with- in one as he beat goaltender Percy Bedard on a penalty shot. However, time ran out on the Mohawks, who pressed hard in the final minutes. Both goaltenders turned in a strong performance as Bill Inch handled 43 Flyer shots while the Mohawks shot 38 time: at Percy Bedard. The penalt- ies were even with both teams drawing 14 minutes, The Flyers are a_ itotne next Sunday as the Shipka Colonials came to town. Zurich Atoms e re :;al u'"' cwt in Ieagtvpiy, y (by Mark Kirk) The Zurich Atones remain unbeaten through seven league games. Last week the Atoms went to Seaforth where the score was 3-3. Scoring singles for Zurich were Paul Johnston, Gordon Love and David Smith. Dean Armstrong picked up one assist while David Erb collected two. The last game before Christ - utas will be December 18 when Clinton comes to town. The Zurich Bantams, with a strong third period, defeated Clinton by a score of 4-2 on Saturday night in Clinton. In the first period Clinton opened the scoring at 13 sec- onds on a goal by Dan Proctor, Zurich tied the score on a goal by Grant Love at 13:18. In the second period there was no scoring. Despite the lack of scoring the Clinton team had some good scoring changes as they did in the fust period, but Roger O'Brien, the Zurich goalie, played just great in the net, stopping Clinton on what looked like sure goals. In the third period the Zurich boys turned things around as they outplayed the Clinton team. They came up with three goals, Grant Love with his sec- ond of the game and Steve Grain ger and Tim Smith. Clinton scored late in the period, as Roger O'Brien trade a great glove save, but the referee said the force of the shot, took his glove hand across the goal line. Despite this goal Roger played an excellent game, and was easily the star of the game. Grant Love with two goals and an assist played a strong game also. Zurich Midgets down Goderich On Wednesday, December 11, the Goderich Midgets travelled to Zurich. The visiting team carne out on the short end of a 6-0 score. Goal getters for Zurich were Rick Bedard with one and singles going to Wayne Clarke, Randy McKinnon, Marty Becker, and John Haggitt. Zurich received 26 minutes in penalties with Goderich draw- ing a total of 13 minutes. 0 Students of the Zurich Public School will be presenting a program of Christmas carols this afternoon, Thursday, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, from two to three o'clock. The general public are invit- ed to attend this program, and take part in the singing of the carols.
