SANTA CLAUS CAME TO TOWN - Jolly Old Saint Nick paid his official visit to Zurich last
Saturday afternoon, sponsored by the Zurich Lions Club, and close to 500 children were on hand
to greet him. The top photo shows a group of the children crowding around Santa, while in the
lower photo Joey and Jerry Groot, twin sons of Mr, and Mrs. John Groot, R, R,1, Zurich, are seen
as they pose with the kind old gentleman,
News of Varna
The United Church Women
met in the basement of the
church with 38 present at the
pot luck supper. The singing of
Christmas carols led by Mrs.
Robert Stirling then followed.
Mrs. Mervyn Hayter opened
the meeting with a reading on
the life of "Mary, the Mother
of Jesus." Group III led in the
worship by readings on the
theine of Christmas some of
which were "The Continuing
Christ" read by Mrs. Roy Ell-
iott, "The Carpenters Shop, "
by Mrs. Aldie Mustard, and
"The True Meaning of Christ-
mas" by Mrs. David Roy. Off-
ering was taken up by Mrs. Roy
and dedicated by Mrs. Sherlock
Keyes. "0 Come All Ye Faith-
ful" was sung and the devotion-
al period was closed by prayer.
The minutes of the last meet-
ing and roll call was taken by
Mrs. Harvey Hayter. Loose
collection was to go to the
shelter in Goderich. Mrs. Bob
Webster gave the treasurer's
report. It was decided that the
Christmas concert would be
held on December 23 in the
Township Hall, Boxes for the
sick and shut-ins are going to be
packed. There were 30 calls
made to the sick and shut-ins in
November.
Mrs. Aldie Mustard gave the
nomination report that all
offices will be filled by the
same people of last year ex-
cept for president which will
be taken by Mrs. Bill Taylor
for the first three months and
Mrs. Bob Stirling for the last
six months. The position of
president for the three months
left vacant and the vice-presid-
ent's position will be held at
the January meeting.
Mrs, Grant Turner from Bay-
field demonstrated the making
of Christmas decorations. Mrs.
Doris Wilson thanked Mrs. Turn-
er.
ORANGE LODGE
Loyal Orange Lodge 1035,
Varna held their annual meet-
ing and banquet on Tuesday,
December 3. The banquet was
held at Hully Gully, Varna,
where the members enjoyed a
roast beef dinner. At the meet-
ing held in the Orange Hall
Varna, three new members,
Keith Stephenson, Robert Hayt-
er and Brian McAsh were initiat-
ed into the Orange Degree.
South Huron County Master
Alex Hamilton, Grand Bend
presented a fifty-year pin and
certificate to Wilmer Reid,
Varna, who has been a member
of the local lodge since June
5, 1924.
It was planned to hold public
card parties again this winter
beginning after Christmas.
A committee was appointed to
operate the skating rink this
winter. The first bowling party
for members and their wives
will be held in January.
The County Master presided
for election of officers for 1975
and installed the following;
Past Master, Wilfrid Chuter;
Master, Ronald Taylor; Deputy -
Master, Robert Webster;Chapl-
ain, Louis Taylor; secretary,
Barry Taylor; treasurer, Will-
iam Dowsori. First Lecturer,
Eric Chuter; Second Lecturer,
Doug McAsh; Marshall,. Allan
Hayter; Tyler, Dave Roy;
committee men, Don Taylor,
Ralph Stephenson, Frank Mc-
Clinchey, John Ostrom and
Robert Taylor.
Obituary

MRS. EDGAR SCHNELL
A former resident of Stanley
Township, Mrs. Edgar Schnell
passed away in Caturose, Alb-
erta, on Sunday, December 8,
in her 74th year. She was a
daughter of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Robert McBride, of Stan-
ley Township. She left this
area about 48 years ago,
Surviving besides her husband
are three daughters, Mrs.
George (Jean) Raciway, of
Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Grant
(Joyce) Moore, of Penticton,
B.C.; Mrs. E.E. (Marilyn)
Lawrence, of Princeton; one
son Bob Schnell, of Red Deer,
Alberta; one sister, Mrs, Stew-
art (Emma) Beattie, of Winghan
and five brothers, Wilbert
McBride, of Kitchener; Lorne
and Edgar, of Kippen; and
Walter and Elinore, of Exeter.
Two brothers, Alvin and Leon-
ard McBride, pre -deceased her.
The funeral se -vice was held
at the Camrose United Church,
on Wednesday, December 11,
Attending from the area were
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Beattie,
Mr. and Mrs. Walter McBride
and Mrs, Elmore McBride.
