BEST POTTING SOIL
Just any potting soil is not
good enough for your house-
plants. They deserve the best --
a soil full of nutrients, with
good drainage, and free of
weed seeds and disease organ-
isms.
"A mix of one third coarse
peat moss, one third soil and
one third coarse sand or perlite
is excellent for most house-
plants, " says Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food hortic-
ulturist, J.H. Hughes. He
recommends coarse materials
to ensure good drainage. This
reduces the danger of overwat-
ering and allows plant roots to
get air.
Kill weed seeds and disease
organisms in newly prepared
soil by spreading it on cookie
sheets and baking it in the oven
for 30 minutes at 180 deg. F.
Add a slow-release fertilizer
from your local plant supply
center to the potting soil.
