Officials of the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation
Authority were surprised when
150 persons turned up Sunday
afternoon for a planned hike
around their 67 -acre Bannock-
burn Wildlife Area located in
Stanley Township, three and a
half miles northwest of
Brucefield.
Roger Martin, Resource
Manager of the Authority said,
"We are overwhelmed. We ex-
pected 20 to 25,"
Situated on the Bannockburn
River which flows into the
Bayfield River, it is known for
its unique natural beauty and
abundant wildlife -- deer, fox,
raccoon, beaver.
The hikers were led on a trail
through cedar hush, up the
Bannockburn Valley slope
through a mixed hardwood
forest of oak, maple, Keech,
hickory and wild apple, along
open rolling grasslands and
back down and along the river
to the gate.
Larry Lamb, an experienced
naturalist, pointed 'out the
natural springs on the
property; various shrtlhs--silky
dogwood, spice bush, button-
wood; and moss --British
soldier's moss which has a red
top, giving it the appearance of
a soldier in uniform; a variety
if birds' nests and wood duck
testing boxes.
