Mr. H.L. Albright, who has
purchased the general store and
stock from Mr. J. Preeter, is
having the interior remodelled
and refitted and when finished
will have a nice clean store.
He is also fitting up a room on
the second floor which will be
given to the ladies as a waiting
room.
The weatherman was kind
to the Fall Fair. The day was
completed by a well-filled
house in the Town Hall, who
gave attention to the concert.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Datars and
Mr. and Mrs. P. Deichert were
in Stratford on Wednesday.

Do Food Dyes Cause Cancer?
A German professor approved
the law forbidding the use of
synthetic butter -yellow and
other synthetic dyes in German
butter, cheese and margarine.
Digging and excavation has
begun for the new "Babe" Sie-
bert Memorial Arena Rink,
Zurich. If we want an arena
we must do just like other
towns do --turn in and put it
along, both financially and
physically. On Tuesday even-
ing, an army of men, mostly
Lions Club, took to the shovel
and made the dirt fly in great

There has been a lot of dreary
weather the past few weeks,
with little sunshine, and it has
been bad for fall fairs. Many
have been mined out and others
were just on the balance wheth-
er to call it off or not.

Congratulations to Mona Des-
jardine and Donna Turnbull,
winners of the oral speaking at
Zurich Fall Fair. Both of these
girls are from S.S, 11, Hay,
Mrs, Melvin Desjarding,
teacher.
Mrs. Leo Meidinger entert-
ained relatives and friends on
Thursday in honor of Miss Marj-
orie Ducharme, bride -elect.
On Saturday last the passing
out of sight of the so-called
daylight saving time has brought
relief to the farmers in this
township.

Ratepayers in the Township
of Hay will pay approximately
one mill less on their taxes this
year, as a result of the new
rate set by the council at their
meeting on Monday night.
The one -mill decrease is in
the general and road rate.

Zurich Women's Institute
met on Monday evening for
their regular meeting with 22
members present.
Mrs. H. Hohner was chair -
lady and read a poem on
"Thankfulness."
Mrs. Ward Neeb and daught-
ers Sylvia and Martha contrib-
uted two musical numbers,
Hi -Le, Hi -Lo" and Mansion
over the Hilltop."
For the topic "Citizenship"
Mrs. M. McKinnon gave an
interesting talk in which she
mentioned the respect young
people used to have for their
elders and the disrespect prev-
alent today for parents and law
among many teenagers. She
sompleted her talk with a poem
"Glory of a Nation."
Mrs. B. Geiger, presented a
new member Mrs. H. Neeb,
with an Institute pin.
A donation of $12.00 was
given to the CNIB and the W.I.
also decided to sponsor the Red
Cross canvas in the village
later this fall.
Four senior members of the
Institute, Mrs. M. Hay, Mrs.
N. Koehler, Mrs. W. Merner,
and Mrs. Tetreau, who had all
celebrated birthdays recently,
expressed their thanks for
remembrances.

MORE DRIVERS
The number of licenced
drivers in Canada is increasing
at a rate greater than the pop-
ulation growth, says the Ontaric
Safety League. In 1962, approx.
imately one third of the popul-
ation held drivers licences.
In 1972, almost half the pop-
ulation were licenced drivers.
According to Statistics Canada
figures, there were 10, 513, 555
licenced drivers in 1972. The
estimated population that year
was 21, 830, 000.

Mrs. Harvey Hayter read the
minutes of the last rreeting
and took the roll call. Treas-
urer's report was read. Also
correspondence notes were
read by Mrs. Ida McClinchey.
Mrs. Mervyn Hayter then cond-
ucted a short business meeting.
Mrs. Mervyn Hayter then
introduced two guests for the
evening, Mrs. Murray Forbes
and Mrs. Stanley Johns, who
gave a very interesting insight
into their three days in August
at Alma College in St. Thomas
They mentioned the topics that
were discussed and their stay
concluded with a meaningful
communion service of a round
circle and common cup and
the one piece of bread.

price in January '75.
It was voted that the UCW
be responsible to sell the United
Church calendars this year as
there is no youth group.
Mrs. Mock closed the meet-
ing with a prayer and everyone
repeated the Lord's Prayer.
Members of Unit IV served a
delicious lunch.
