Tractor club
holds meeting
(by Glen Hayden)
The fourth meeting of the
Huron County 4-H Tractor Club
was held at Vincent's Farm
Equipment, Seaforth. •
The topic discussed was dies-
el injection systems. Mr. Vin-
cent's two mechanics told us
how to set injection pumps,
and also described the differ-
ence between direct and indir-
ect injections.
In our discussion on mainten-
ance, we also learned that die-
sel tractors are easier on fuel
and have fewer parts, making
them easier to maintain than
their gas counterparts.
We were also shown how to
bleed air from a diesel tractor
after it has run out of fuel.
Lunch was served by Marlin
Vincent, after which the meet-
ing was adjourned.
The 4-1-1 Tractor Club
Achievement Day was held
at the Huron County Plowing
Match on Saturday, September
14. Each member answered a
quiz on tractor maintenance
parts. During the course of the
day, each member also partic-
ipated in a Tractor Driving
Contest, with Nelson Underwood
of R.R.1, Wingham, placing
first; Jim Fairles, R, R.1, Gorrie,
placing second; and John Under-
wood, of R. R.1, Wingham,
placing third.

FROST ON CORN
(continued from page 14)
esting should not be delayed
unnecessarily.
In general, we would expect
a, pattern similar to 1965 when
the first frost came on August
30. Our plots put on an addit-
ional 20 - 40 bu/acre after the
frost, but by raid -October we
had over 95% lodging.
Because of respiration losses,
total plant dry matter yield
will drop steadily with time.
A lot of water was lost from
frozen leaves and upper stalks
during the day immediately
after the frost and, because of
husk -death the rest of the plant
will dry more rapidly than nor-
mal. With unfrozen plants,
65% whole -plant moisture
corresponds approximately to
45% grain moisture; with froz-
en plants, I would expect the
corresponding grain moisture
content to be closer to 50°jo.
This corresponds to a stage whei
the kernels are dented and not
juicy in the upper (outer) part
of the kernel, but are still
quite juicy below. Silage
should be harvested as early as
possible to avoid excessive resp•
iration losses, but not so early
as to cause seepage. The corn
will dry down more quickly
after the frost, but not instantly
On a dry matter basis, corn
silage fromimmature frozen
corn should be just as digestible
and valuable for feeding as
"normal" silage from more
mature corn! provided the im-
mature corn is ensiled at a
moisture content below 70%,
animal dry matter intake will
be satisfactory. As a result,
we would suggest that farmers
with well -advanced corn, who
had planned to ensile their crop,
might consider filling their
silos with immature corn from
a neighbour and keeping their
own crop for grain. Both part-
ies, and the province, could
gain financially.
