Zurich, Ontario.
Sept. 13, 1974.
Dear Editor;
After jolting home along
John Street today I was amazed
to read in your paper of the
new $40, 000 office the coun-
cil is planning. This price, of
course, does not include the
cost of the lot and landscaping
or the cost of the architect. I
feel sure many would prefer
some of this money to be spent
on improving the streets and
other expenses that are really
necessary.
Let's face it. The T.V.
quotation "Your not getting
older, your getting better, "
doesn't apply to Zurich, which
has had two large businesses
close during the past year. So
why the sudden need for such
expensive accommodation
for the small number of persons
who will benefit from it?
Many of Zurich's citizens
are retired on a fixed income.
I am sure they will view this
extravagance with alarm. We
are already busy planting how
to cope with the extra expense
of the sewers, have been told
of the needed repairs to the
community centre, of a new
and enlarged village park, of
a swimming pool --and we
ask ourselves, who is going to
pay for it? The answer is always
the'same--us. Whether the
government pays part in the
form of grants the answer never
changes. It is still --us. Well
us hasn't got it. How about
you?

minority to run the world is
for the majority to sit back and
do nothing."

Dear Editor;
I was appauled when I read
the recent articles in our local
weeklies regarding Me findings
of OntarioHydro in respect to
a proposed nuclear station for
Huron County. The spokesman
for Ontari Hydro said opposition
by municipal officials and area
residents was a major reason
for suspending plans to establ-
ish a nuclear generating station
site in Huron County.
What is wrong with some of
our officials and residents that
they cannot see past the end of
their noses? Do the people of
Huron County' not realize the
advantages of Ontario Hydro
constructing this plant in Huron
We have for several years had
a terrible transportation probl-
em; do you not think with the
nuclear station, and the added
residents, that this problem
would not be solved? Do our
merchants not want the added
income which would certainly
come with the added residents?
Would property values not go
up? Would the vacant houses
and apartments not be taken up
by the added residents? Would
a developer not buy up some
of the swampy -cold -bottomed
land and turn it into housing
developments? Best of all,
would people who have been
existing on unemployment
insurance not be able to have
real good jobs? What of the
young people in the County
who have to go elsewhere to
find employment? Why not
keep these people in Huron
County? Are we so secure in
Huron County that we can.
afford to turn down a proposal
such as this? Are people afraid
to take a chance on something
that might very well be a bon-
anza to our county?
I have a healthy respect
for our farmers in Huron County
without them we could not
survive. But what of the farm-
ers who retire and still stay on
in their farm homes and let the
land just sit? And as for nuclear
fall -out (which I think is the

main reason people are afraid
of the generating station) has
it harmed the residents in Pick-
ering or the residents of Douglas
Point? As far as smaller mun-
icipalities worrying over the
project creating the need for
water and sewage systems; these
are inevitable. They will
come when our Health Depart-
ments see the need for them,
and with the added residents,
the cost of such systems to each
individual would be less. This
is a project we will not be able
to oppose. Local dumps are
being closed because of the
environmental hazards; and
this too Is inevitable. Opposit-
ion to this would be ludicrous,
I personally have no axe to
grind as far as this project is
concerned. My husband and
son are fortunate to have real
good jobs; but what of our
future employees, our younger
family?
How many projects can we in
Huron County afford to turn
down?
I would like to commend the
Mayor of Goderich, Mr. Harry
Worsen when he said he didn't
oppose the generating plant. He
thinks it would be a good thing;
but apparently he is one of the
few who think so.
What or if the day comes
when regional government
takes over out County? Who
will be to blame? What will our
officials do then? Will they sit
and wring their hands and wand-
er how it could have happened?
This will be yet another
project they will not be able to
oppose.
