Area clergyman attends general
session of United Church
The 26th General Council
of the United Church of Canada
met at the University of
Guelph for seven days recently.
This is the highest policy-mak-
ing body of the church.
Rev. Bruce Guy, supply min-
ister of Emmanuel United
Church, was a Commissioner to
the Council. His reactions are:
working, walking, waiting,
worshipping and wilting. Some
450 commissioners (delegates)
elected from across Canada,
Interest shown in
f, mily planning
Increasing interest is being
shown in the birth control clin-
ic of the Huron County family
planning project. The Huron
County family planning proj-
ect is operated by a profess-
ional staff under a grant from
the Federal Government.
The birth control clinic isin
operation every Tuesday and
Thursday evening from 6:30
to 9 p.m. at the Agricultural
College, Huron Park.
A full range of birth control
services are offered, all free of
charge. As well as counselling,
the clinic is able to provide
facilities for medical examin-
ations, pap smears, rim insert-
ions and the dispensing of oral
contraceptives.
Illegitimate births have
shown a definite increase, part-
icularly in the high school age
groups. It is hoped that this
clinic, through its services,
will allow those people of any
age group, including high
school, to seek information and
advice when they need it.
In attendance each Tuesday
and Thursday evening is a pub-
lic health nurse, no appoint-
ment necessary, and a doctor
is available at the clinic by
appointment.
For further information or an
appointment, call the Exeter
office of the Huron County
Health Unit at 235-1014 on
weekdays, or the clinic itself

made up the Council. Each
person represented about 15, 000
United church people.
The Lieutenant Governor of
Ontario addressed the Council,
as did a person, sentenced to
life imprisonment and imprison-
ed for 10 years.
The Plan of Union was app-
roved in principle between the
Disciples of Christ in Canada,
the Anglican Church of Canada
and the United Church of
Canada. The Plan is now open
for revision, and will be voted
on again next June, by this
Council. If these and succeed-
ing votes are favourable, fin-
ally every member of the
churches will have a vote on
the new "Church of Christ in
Canada."
Matters dealt with in the
10 -hour daily sessions covered
a wide range of concerns from
the plight of fellow -Christians
in the Phillipines and Korea, to
the bitterness in the grape ind-
ustry of California, the minist-
ry of every person of the
church and how it may be bet-
ter carried forward, and even
an appeal of a local church
with its difficulties. Council
seemed determined to try to
be aware of the needs of indiv-
idual persons.
Commissioners walked about
five miles each day for meals
and sessions. After the first
three days they felt fine. Much
sharing took place from B.C.
to the Maritimes waiting "in
line" for meals. Prayer and
praise were a real part of al-
most every session as the Mod-
erator, the Right Rev. Wilbur
Howard, guided the sessions.
His prayer: "Lord, let the tens-
ions drip out our fingertips"
was really answered.
The hot August days caused
the wilting. But attendance
was not less than 800/0 and on
up to 100'/o many sessions.
Homeowners and businesses
can reduce winter time salt
damage to driveways and gar-
ages by applying a protective
treatment this summer. First
application should be 50 per-
cent linseed oil and 50 percent
kerosene.

All -Stars make good showing
The Zurich All -Stars came
up with a big effort in the
Forest Fastball tournament on
Labor Day weekend. The Zur-
ich squad finished with a resp-
ectable two wins and one loss
for a second place finish in
the "B" division. The team
picked up $100. for their show-
ings.
The All -Stars played their
first game on Sunday at 10:30
p.m. and came up with a
thrilling 6-2 victory over
Bryanston. Murray Morrison
went the distance on the mound
for the local squad and came
up with a strong performance,
striking out eight Bryanston
batters. The game saw some
great catches by Pat Bedard
in right field and excellent
fielding by Richard Schilbe and
Kevin McKinnon.
The next game for Zurich
was Monday at ]2 o'clock noon.
The All -Stars carne up with
their biggest effort as they
defeated a strong team from
Reece's Corners by a 4-3 score.
Murray Morrison again went
the distance on the mound,
coming up with one of his
best performances as a pitcher

had to make some great catches
this time with Aubrey Bedard
Cull cattle for
better results
"To help yourself withstand
the current period of low beef
prices, cull the poor -producing
cattle from your herd at wean-
ing time, " recommends an Ont-
ario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food livestock specialist.
"The new -"Do -It -Yourself
Herd Testing Program is a meth-
od of determining 200 -day
weights for all your calves,
so you can see which cows
should be sold because their
offspring are light, " says R.E.
Macartney. The weights of
heifer, steer and bull calves
as well as those born to heifers,
can be standardized with this
method.
For success, each cow and
c.alf must be identified and each
calf's date of birth recorded.
Weight the calf at weaning
and record weight, date and
sex. Then you can determine
its 200 -day weight, using the
charts and tables provided.
"Do -I -Yourself" Herd Testing
programs can be obtained
by writing to N.M. MacLeod,

Cattle Performance Testing
Program, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, Parlia-
ment Buildings, Toronto,
Ontario, M7A 1B4.
All beef cattle should,be
pregnancy checked at weaning
time and those not in calf
should be replaced with preg-
nant cattle.

After that great win, the
All -Stars had an hour -and -a
half rest before the champion-
ship game which started at 3:30
p.m. The Zurich squad came
up with a good effort, but
could not cope with the hitting
and pitching of a very strong
Wyoming Juveniles team who
happended to be one of the top
teams in Ontario. The final
score was 8-0 for Wyoming.
Keith Hudson started for the
locals on the mound, was relie-
ved by Murray Morrison in the
third inning. Morrison was rel-
ieved by Brian Hodgins who
,,pitched for the remainder of
the game. The locals just
couldn't get the bats going.
The Zurich team was certain-
ly proud of their efforts as they
picked up $100. for finishing
second in the tournament.
The Zurich All -Stars were:
Brian Hodgins, Kevin McKinn-
on, Richard Schilbe, Gary Flax -
