The last few weeks have been very busy. Seven children went tlo the Lake Huron Zone track and field meet in Owen Sound on July 31. We carne home with a first in the 100 metre dash won by Lynda Rawlings and a second in the running broad jump by Barbara Smith. All theother participants did well but did not place. The morning playground spent one morning at the Pine - ridge Zoo near Grand Bend. They all enjoyed seeing the various animals and birds, and were surprised at the size of the Ostrich egg that had just been laid. Another morning was spent at the Hollnesville Nature Park. The children enjoyed feeding the ducks and THUR., FRI., SAT., SUN., MON., TUES., AUGUST 29, 30, 31, SEPT. 1, 2, 3, THUR., SUN., MON., TUES., ONE SHOWING AT 8:00 P.M. The afternoon group spent a day at Grand Bend playing miniature golf and a trip through the Horror House. I would like to thank every- one who supported the walk-a- thon from Zurich to Hensall and back. The first three boys were back in less than two and one-half hours and the last group of six (including myself) finished in six hours. The next day we had a camp out at "Ivan's Grove." Thirty- one children spent Wednesday afternoon and night and Thurs- day Morning playing various games, walking on the trails and helping with cooking of meals. For many, it was their first time to sleep in a tent or in a sleeping bag under the stars Roller skating and swimming were still a weekly event for the afternoon playground. All the unfinished crafts were completed during the last week. To give our playground a grand finale, the money raised on the walk-a-thon was used to take the children to Marine - land near Niagara Falls. The bus left a 9 a. in. on Tuesday, August20, We arrived at Mar- ineland at noon and ate our picnic lunches under the trees. We entered the grand stand early to be sure of getting good seats' for the show. Each child had his favourite part of the show such as the dolphins, sea lions, tigers, trick bears, ele- phants or the killer whale.' After the show the children Gra it&hill of icicuple cos i:cell Margaret Elligsen, Waterloo, has first place and $1, 000 in the voice competition at the national competitive music festival held at the Canadian National Exhibition. Miss Elligsen won the prov- incial competition in June in Toronto after her success at the local Kiwanis Music Festival. She began her vocal studies with Mr. Gordon Scott, Strat- ford and is presently studying with Mr. Victor Martens at Waterloo. She and her sister, Joanne, will give a voice and piano concert at the Kitchener Libr- ary on Wednesday evening. Joanne is leaving for Vienna in September to study piano. Joanne and Margaret are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Elligsen, Walton, and the granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Deichert, of Zur- ich. STAG FOR JIM REGIER FRIDAY, AUG. 30 Zurich Areniii toured the aquarium and the Game Farm, where they patted and fed the animals which are very tame and look for a handout of special food pellets. I thoroughly enjoyed this summer and learned a lot about children during the past eight weeks. Our program could not have operated successfully without help from many people. I would like to give a spec- ial thank -you to Art Hoy, Recreation Director for Zuridz, fo all the help he gave Dave and me, the Zurich Recreation Committee and the Youth and Recreation Branch for their fin- ancial support, any mothers who helped in any way, Don Oke for the use of his truck van, the workers at the Mech- anology Centre for their help at our track and field meet and Ivan Kalbfleisch, for the use of his Grove.
