A Bean Festival general
committee oversees the plan-
ning and organization of the
event and the committee's
task is becoming an almost
year-round activity, so much
has the festival grown in it's
eight years of existence.
Backing up the general com-
mittee is a large group of
volunteers. There are sub-
committees in charge of
everything from cooking beans
to emergency arrangements
in the event of adverse weather
conditions. The sub -committee:
report regularly to the general
committee on progress through
he year, and as festival time
nears the meetings become
more and more frequently.
Chairman for this year's
festival is Ray McKinnon, the
man who first came up with the
idea of a Bean Festival nine
years ago. He has served off
and on as chairman of the event
for at least half of the years the
event has been in operation.
Serving as vice-chairman
of the event is Glen Thiel, who
was chairman last year. Sec-
retary is Mrs. Marge Schilbe,
while W.D. Armstrong is treas-
urer of the Bean Festival Corp-
oration.
Gerald Gingerich and his
wife, Pearl, head up the most
important committee of the
entire project --food. Arranging
for all the workers in this dep-
artment is Mrs. Don Oke, who
has capably enlisted help from
every organization in the com-
munity.
Other chairmen of various
committees are; concessions
and midway, Glen Weido,
tours, Orland Reichert, traffic
and parking, Carl Thiel,
hydro, Charles Eckel; property
Oscar Greb; horseshoes, Jim
Bedard, entertainment, Mrs.
Glen Thiel, Queen Contest,
Mrs. Hubert Schilbe and publ-
icity, Herb Turkheim.

the same as in years past.
An old fashioned pancake
and sausage breakfast starts the

Zurich Minor Athletic Assoc-
iation are in charge of the
breakfast.
Delicious home -baked beans
with all the trimmings will
still be the feature attraction,
being served from I1 o'clock
until late in the evening. The
committee in charge are expect
ing close to 20, 000 people ,
about the same crowd as there
was last year.
The beans will be cooking
in old-fashioned iron kettles
right in view of the crowd.
Visitors will be able to eat their
meals at picnic tables spread
throughout the main business
areas of the village. While mos

PEOPLE --the people of Zurich
and surrounding area volunteer
their time and labour to make
the Bean Festival such an out-
standing success.
After the primary planning
has been completed by the over•
all committee in charge, the
call goes out for volunteers for
the scores of jobs that must be
done on festival day. Between
200 and 300 local residents
are actively involved in the
festival on the big day.
Their services are used for
cooking beans, making cole
slaw, buttering bread, making
coffee, slicing meat, waiting
on tables and the dozens of
other jobs which must be looked
after.
Some of the men look after
selling tickets, arranging tours
to the bean fields, and super-
vise the horseshoe tournament.
These are only a few of the
many tasks. Others have to
supervise parking and of course
there are those who assist the
ladies in the cooking departmen
Then there are the exhibitors
or those who set up stands on
the streets for the big day. All
these jobs require help --and
more help. But the people of
the community have been good
to rally to the cause and assist
wherever needed.
