PAGE 4 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS SOUVENIR EDITION Th Y value of a Ben Festival (by George Brunton) No doubt you all realize that sometimes we are too close to an event to fully appreciate it's significance. I think that this may have happened to many of us who are so close to the annual Bean Festival that we have failed to realize its import- ance. To many of us it represents a full day or more of work, and thankless work at that. However, what is really happening is that we gain extra dollars for worthwhile projects which will benefit our entire community, and secondly, we provide an area of entertaintnent which thousands of visitors from our province and the United States look forward to in an effort to return to the true rustic life of the pioneers. How can we truly measure the benefits to our community which the annual Bean Festival provides? We are given a unique opportunity as a community to join together in an effort to provide entertainment and hospitality to visitors from far and near, while creating a pride in our community. If there still exists any doubt concerning the value of the annual Bean Festival, just check the increased attendance which indicates the resounding positive opinion to our annual event. When we are asked to contribute in any way to the operation of the day, let's appreciate the invitation and contribute in a positive mariner to snake our Zurich Bean Fest- ival bigger and better each year! This means of course that the world's fanners have to produce food for these additional people. This year the population increase wilibe greater and every year after that until the world is saturated with people. Even now one disastrous crop year in any of the five major grain producing countries will mean widespread hunger througl, out the poorer world and sky- locketing prices for the rest. One cynic told me recently that we can't be expected to feed the world if the populat- ion keeps on growing. He stated that it will be as it always has been, and people will die by the millions until a balance bet- ween food production and peoph has been reached. It's ghastly to contemplate but as long as better birth control is not used it appears that my cynic will be right. By the way, he him- self has five children. As long as we continue to cover our agricultural land with cities and highways and shoppin€ plazas, we hasten the time this will come to pass, by slaughtering the goose that lays the golden eggs. Hailed by many as a great step forward for the farmer is the inclusion of Ontario corn on the Canadian futures mark- et. I sincerely hope the opti- mists are right. The futures market has been very useful marketing tool., The exper- iences of the last two years on the Chicago futures market leaves me with some doubts of it's continuous usefulness. Speculators left Wall Street in large numbers and bought paper soyabeans. In the selling and reselling of these comm- odities the price kept going up. Fortunes were made with- out a single bushel of product changing hands. The soyabeans producer made no money and Save your way to prosperity When you put your money regularly into a special savings account at Victoria and Grey Trust we pay you generous interest. Will the same thing happen with corn? Today's prices seems to indicate a trend in that dir- ection. Let's hope that the fut- ures market doesn't become a tool for permanent ripoff on farmer and consumer.
