Sirup folk tour are
The fourth annual summer
tour of the Ontario Maple
Syrup Producers Association was
held in the Huron County area
on Friday and Saturday, July
26 and 27.
Producers from across Ont-
ario gathered at Albert Schilbe'S
Maple Bush in Goderich Town-
ship
ownship north of Bayfield at noon
on Friday for registration,
after which Albert explained
his modern set up and answer-
ed questions on his methods of
tapping.
Next on the tour was Gordon
Westlake's syrup camp, south
of Bayfield in Stanley Town-
ship, where the Department of
Lands and Forest are working
with Gordon on woodiot man-
agement. Methods of marking
and thinning trees were shown
by Cor Blanken, of Natural
Resources of Wingham.
The tour then moved south
to Charles Corbett's camp at
Brinsley, where 2000 taps are
on dry vacuum and the sap is
processed in an oil -fired ev-
aporator. The producers then
gathered at Centralia College
for a barbecue chicken ban-
quet and square dancing with
caller Mac Macellus of Barrie.
Many producers and their wives
were billeted at the College
overnight.
The tour resumed on Satur-

Take part hi
youth exchange
(by Ursula Regier)
Two girls, both from Alberta,
took part in the National Farm-
ers Union Youth Exchange.
Coming into this area were 16
year old Debbie Olineck from
Vegreville, Alberta, her host
home being at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Herbert Klopp, R. R.
3, Zurich, and 17 year old
Ella Joan Macuik, R. R,1,
St, Michaels, Alberta, where
her host home was with Mr.
and Mrs, Harry Gieben, R,R.2,
Crediton.
Debbie lives on a third gen-
eration farm, 65 miles north of
Edmonton. Since she resides on
a 640 acre farm, she is surpris-
ed at the small farms in this are;
and she can't understand how
the farmers are able to make a
living off their small operation.
The crops that interest her the
inost are the corn and beans,
since they are not grown around
her birthplace. Their climate
is not as warns as ours, and she
admired people with a tan.
There are fairly new homes in
their vicinity, and don't have
stone foundations similar to
ours. Even our big barns amaz-
ed her. She also said she did
not feel isolated in this area
with towns, villages and ham-
lets being so close.
Ella Joan said they had a
small farm, around 250 acres,
and also had bad spring weath-
er. She called home while here,
and they had just started seed-
ing. On their farm they grow
mainly grain and flax and have
a few cows, Her both parents
work out besides farming.
There were approximately
64 youth came into the prov-
ince of Ontario. The other prov-
inces had their equal share, too.
They stayed 10 days at their
host homes and left for their
western home on Monday, July
22. Their hosts showed them
several parts of Ontario, and
our Junior President, John
Vanderburgt, took them to
Niagara Falls and other interest-
ing points.
