WIDE ASSORTMENT - The verandah of the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Gordon Schwalm in Hensall boasts of a wide variety of
southern trees and plants. At the left, the tall specimen is a
banana tree, while in the centre of the photo is a lemon tree
which bears a considerable amount of fruit each year. Numer-
ous lemons can be seen in the photo. One of the favourite
hobbies of Mrs. Schwalm is collecting fruit trees and plants from
other countries and she has been quite successful in having them
grow under different climatic conditions.

Simple control
of weeds
for lawns
In the gardener's constant
battle with broad-leaved weeds,
chemical weed control has be-
come an accepted practice for
home lawns.
"One of the first chemicals
introduced many years ago is
still one of the best for broad-
leaved weed control in home
lawns, " says R.A. Fleming,
horticultural specialist with the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food. "Most broad-leaved
weeds are susceptible to 2,4-D.
The basic rate for control of
lawn weeds with 2, 4- D is 16
ounces per acre of the active
part of the preparation (approx-
mately one-third ounce active
per 1, 000 square feet). The
chemical 2, 4-D or 2, 4-D plus
mecoprop or dicamba should be
used as recommended on the
label to prevent damage to
lawns and nearby garden plants.
Dandelion and plantain are
usually killed with one applic-
ation of the chemical. Others,
such as yarrow, black medic
and ribgrass may require two
or three treatments at 10 -day
intervals for complete control.
The hard ones, such as ground
ivy or creeping Charlie, the
chickweeds and round -leafed
mallow, may require several
treatments, continuing right
FM. SAT.
through the growing season, to
eliminate them completely.
Mr. Fleming points out that
2, 4-D compounds work best in
May, June September, and
October, when the weeds are
growing vigorously.
