All highway signs in Canada are scheduled to be changed to metrics by September, 1977. (Photo by Ministry of Trans- portation and Communications) Farmers protest Angry farmers at the regular meeting of the Huron Federation of Agriculture accused fertiliz- er companies of exporting huge loads of nitrogen fertilizer desperately needed here to the United States because prices there are up to $150 per ton higher. Even some individuals came in for severe criticism for doing the same thing, by truck- ing their oversupplies across the border, As a first step it was decided to phone Agriculture Minister Whelan and Agriculture Minist- er Stewart as well as all Huron MP's and MPP's to ask for help. Many farmers found that conf- irmed orders can't be met by the dealers, who have their confirmed orders cancelled as well. If the farmer doesn't have the fertilizer, the yield will be down at harvest, with sub- sequent increases in prices to the consumer, The meeting demanded immediate action by government and considerable support was expressed for event- ual picket lines at the exits to the USA. Agri -notes (By Adrian Vos) Some people have an odd way of fuguring. What is not so odd is that the figuring turns mostly so that they make more money. Take for instance the Canadian Food Processors Ass- ociation. Because of the increas ed cost of peas the price of a 14 ounce can of peas will go up flHIL'S VARIETY 1 ;AIN STREET - ZURICH featuring a complete line of Groceries * Cor fect onery No eItjes Phone 236-4930 for free delivery on orders of $5.00 or over ROMISSOESSER r rt•;:.;; y:::z;S.,iii:;?:;?..;;.•:;'.;;;:-<t'tiE MOMMEMEW HA °;' BURG AND HOT DOG R LLS REG 450 PKG 2 PKGS. 79 TASTY 11U BAKERY ZURICH by 70. however, the processor pays the farmer only one cent more for a pound of peas. I cannot but wonder if Mrs. Plum• tre is aware of this kind of arith- metic. I read in "Farm and Country" magazine that a new type of rabbit has come from good old England. It could do the same thing that earlier rabbits did in Australia, overrun the country, bur this time in the rabbit barns, They can raise 100 little ones a year. The male mentioned was something else. "After mating with 60 females each day for seven months, fie died one happy rabbit," the mag- azine says. Aluch has been written in the press about the ban on Americ- an beef. A little because of pot- ential cancer through American use of DES and a lot on the way it effects the price of a steak. Not so much has been said about the position of the pork producer. Ile however, is in as much of a ham as the beef man. Losses of $15 per head are now common. If you figure that a total of five finished hogs weigh as much as a finished steer, you can also figure that his losses are comparable. The beef men received some help in the form of a federal subsidy but the pork tnen are just still hoping. If the hope fades we will see heavy cutbacks in production, follow- ed by pork shortages and sub- sequent higher prices. Again, the producer loses and later on the consumer loses. After Agriculture Minister Whelan apparently got assur- ances from the fertilizer compar ies that sufficient fertilizer would be available, it comes as a kind of a shock to learn that huge trailerloads of the stuff go to the US and our farm- ers are told that their needs can't be met. We hope that stern measures against these profiteers will be taken.
