Zurich Citizens News, 1974-05-09, Page 5THURSDAY, MAY 9, 19'74 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Discuss county police force A proposal to form a Huron County police force will be discussed at an open meeting to be held at the Clinton Town Hall Thursday, May 9, at $ p.111, Exeter police chief Ted Day who is chairman of the Huron police chiefs committee said the meeting will discuss propos- als of forming the county depart merit costs, the number of men needed and the advantages and disadvantages. Elected representatives of all municipalities in Huron are invited along with anyone int- erested in county policing. It attendance will be Ontario' Police Commissioner Elmer 13e11, QC, His Honour Judge Graham, Ron Durand and Walt- er Johnson of the Ontario Police Commission. The proposal put forth by the police chiefs committee calls for a force composed of a chief, and four inspectors who would be responsible for policing five divisions set up through rhe county. Huron County is now patrolled by local forces in Exeter, God- erich, Wingham,, Clinton and Seaforth and by the Ontario Provincial Police in the rural areas, The Ontario Task Force on Policing recommended in Feb- ruary that police forces in towns populations of less than 15, 000 should be amalgamated with rhe OPP or be restructured as part of a county or regional police force. Chief Day said his committee has been drafting its proposal since the task force report carne out and wants to establish rite county force "before it's too late and legislation conies out yelling us what to do." It advocates a county force instead of amalgamation be- cause as Day said, "we could do it more reasonably financ- ially and patrolmen would continue to live and work in the same towns. Under OPP jurisdiction he said, patrolmen would be nwre liable for transfer. Under the proposed county force about 30 men would be added to take care of township policing comp- ared with the present force of trrc r by 1g77 21 nlcili, destination signs will t.rc,te(1 (111 Ontario's Highways. signalling the st .it of t six-year program to etmyert the Minisu•\'s operations to the metric syst,In. Honourable John R. Rhodes. Minister of Transpor- tation and Communications, has announced. The green and white signs will show the distance in kilometres to major Ontario communities. All ten Provinces and the Federal Government are working t.) an agreed plan with a target date of September, 1977 for changing all highway signs in Canada. No changes in posted speed limited from miles per hour (m.p.h.) to kilometres per hour (km/h),. or on other regulatory signs will be made before sin li's Ca a September. 1977. 'When speed limit conversions are nlacte, they will likely be changed to round numbers in kilometres per hour, such as 50 knl, 11 in place of 30 m.p.h., or 100 km 11 in place of 60 m.p.h. Metric speedometers are already found on many imported cars and nlotorcvcles, and will soon be a feature on new domestic automobiles. When the changeover takes place, conversion stickers will be available for older vehicles. The plans of the various Ontario Ministries are being co-ordinated by the Metric Office within the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. All 10 Provinces co-operated in development of a national plan for metric changeover of highway construction and operations and this plan was adopted in October. 1973 at the annual convention of the Roads and Transportation Association of Canada. Adoption of the metric system will bring Canada in line with the system of measurement already in use by all' major countries outside of North America.
