If frozen meat pies every
second night of the week fit in
well with your busy lifestyle,
why not check Consumers'
Association of Canada test res-
ults in the April issue of Canad-
ian Consumer to find out just
what it is you're eating.
Fancy packages picturing
abundant colourful vegetables,
large chunks of meat and thick
gravy oozing out of a delicate
golden crust can easily tempt
your taste buds. But in the case
of frozen meat pie "what you
see" is not necessarily "what
you get." Contents are hidden
from consumer scrutiny by box
and crust. Labelling, some-
times inaccurate, is the only
indication of what's inside.
CAC tested 10 popular brands
of frozen meat pies that appear-
ed most frequently in a market
survey. STOUFFER pies emerg-
ed tops in all three varieties
but were almost double the price
of most other pies tested.
SWANSON turkey and chicken
pies also ranked high in over-
all quality. The SULTANA
beef pie was rated unacceptable
because of rancid flavour and
poor quality ingredients while
DEVON and YORK beef pies
received a poor rating of infer-
ior meat quality.
The term "meat pie" is in
itself misleading. Average meat
content in all pies tested rang-
ed from only eight per cent to
17 per cent of tite total pie;
equivalent to between one and
one and a half ounces of meat.
Three ounces of meat is a nor-
mal individual serving. In the
three most common varieties --
turkey, chicken and beef --the
average pie contained 30 per
cent pastry, 20 per cern solid

STOUFFER'S turkey, chicken
and beef pies contained the
highest proportion of solid fill-
ing, DEVON had the highest
average gravy content, while
STEINBERG had the highest
average pastry.
If you're planning to eat a
meat pie for dinner, make sure
that your other meals are high
in protein content. According
to Health and Welfare Canada
meat pies only provide about 30
per cent of the average daily
adult protein requirements.
Even their taste leaves a lot
he be desired. A panel of five
expert tasters found that six
brands of turkey, four brands
of chicken and one brand of
beef pie contained meat which
had a rancid flavour. Rancidity
which results from a chemical
change in fats simply gives an
unpleasant flavour to foods but
is not a health hazard.
Many consumers complain
about the poor condition of
frozen food packages and
their contents. Deterioration
in quality, although often
blamed on the manufacturer,
can occur at any step from
manufacture through distribut-
ion to storage in the retail
freezer. In retail stores cons-
umers often see cases of frozen
products defrosting in aisles,
freezers operated above recom-
mended temperatures and stack-
ed above the load line. These
practices, together with impro-
per stock rotation, prolonged
storage and use of off -flavour
meat by the manufacturer, can
