At that date there was a total of 378 secondary, and post secondary students regist- ered, who were looking for summer employment. The bulk of the registering took place when Miss Helen O'Neil, the student area co- ordinator and Gary Walden, the Summer Student counsellor in African minister Easter speaker at Lutheran Church Easter was celebrated at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Zurich with Rev. Senoelo Mothupi of Pretoria, South Africa, as speaker at both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. services. At the earl- ier service he told something of his own background as a black pastor in a country where separation of racial groups is a religious concept as well as social and political. The earlier service was spon- sored by the Luther League and the committee on youth minis- try. The hymn singing was led by Elizabeth Deichert with guitar and John Deichert on the string bass. Unaccompanied, Pastor and Mrs. Mothupi sang twice with their daughters Susan and Catherine in the Tswana language and Mrs. Mothupi sang alone a hymn of welcome based on Romans, chapter 15. In his sermon at the main service Pastor Mothupi emph- asized that there could be no forgiveness without shedding of blood, no resurrection without death, no Easter without a Good Friday. The choir sang at the main service "He is Risen, " and "Sing with All the Sons of Glory." At the earlier service Mrs. Earl Deichert with daughters Elizabeth and Susan sang a three part harmonization of "Where He Leads Me. I will Follow.'' Between the two services the youth group served break- fast of colored Easter eggs, coffee cake, and other breads. Goderich visited the area high schools. At Goderich District Collegiate the guidance couns- ellor, Mr. Seamen, set aside a room for the day so that inter- ested students could talk with the placement counsellors about job prospects and how to best obtain them. In Clinton, the guidance counsellor, Gord Smith, had screened the students and set up appointments for those int- erested. At Seaforth, a school of 500 pupils, the registering program was very successful. Here stud- ents who were farther from the Canada Manpower Centre in Goderich took advantage of the opportunity to register for work, and kept the counsellors quite busy. Mr. Lawton, rhe guidance counsellor at South lluron Dist- rict lligh School, in Exeter, also set up and arranged a very successful day for both the students and the Canada Man- power Centre counsellors. In all, over 160 students were reg- istered at the high schools. Now, Mr. Walden says, the big job has started; that is, trying to get employers to contact either the Canada Man- power Centre office in God- erich or Huron Park, to hire th these students. The students are eager for work and willing to accept almost anything. However, the response from the employers has been some- what slow. Mr. Walden is hop- ing that a planned program "Hire a Student Week" in June will generate some activity and result in some job openings. Mr. Walden is continually making personnel calls on empl- oyers and in most cases the job response from this has been good, but he is unable to call on every employer in the area. It is to these employers that he asks that they call him, and use the free service, set up by the government, to help fill sum- mer job vacancies. In nearly all cases of student employment, the employer has been completely satisfied. Not only has it resulted in more money for him, but it has also given him more leisure time during the summer. Mr. Walden has tried to make the services of the Canada Manpower Centre in Goderich WO BEDARD CONSTRUCTION really has the "know-how" when it comes to Building And Remodelling *MODERN HOMES *NEW COTTAGES *BARNS & SHEDS *COMPLETE RENOVATIONS Give us a call for any type of Building Construction.
