FIRE DESTROYS ABBATOIR - Fire of undetermined origin early Tuesday morning completely demolished the large abbatoir and
store owned by Ron Merrier, just north of Dashwood. The alarm was turned in around five o'clock, and despite prompt action by the
Dashwood fire brigade the entire roof and interior of the building were completely wiped out. As well as the entire stock of food
products in the store, at least 25 carcasses of beef and several slaughtered pigs were lost. All that remains of the building are the
charred walls. Mr. Merner, the owner of the establishment, is holidaying in Puerto Rico and was not able to be contacted at the time
of the fire.
MEAT DESTROYED - An estimated 25 carcasses of beef, as well as a quantity of pork, were
completely destroyed in the fire at Merner's Abbatoir early Tuesday morning. Some of the meat
is shown in this photo on the floor of the cold storage room, well cooked but not ready to eat.
The firm does a considerable amount of custom work as well as all their own slaughtering.
Bayfield council
(by Milvena Erickson)
At the regular meeting of
Bayfield village council Mon-
day evening, several petitioners
were present and Mr. Woodcock
asked for the use of a spot on
the south side of the river near
the Carson -Elliott Marina to
dock their house boat. This was
denied.
Don Bell, Keith Bunn and
Tony Hutchings requested coun-
cil to ask an adjoining property
owner to remove some derelict
vehicles, etc. Council will dis-
cuss the matter with the property
owner in question.
Members of council stated
they would attend the Tucker -

to be held in Brucefield in the
LOOF Hall on Wednesday,

Joan Buller requesting permis-
sion to open a gift shop in her
home for the summer months is
to be answered. Since the Sullen
property is zoned residential, she
must apply for re -zoning.
A letter from the LCBO answ-
ering a request from the village
in regards to a liquor store was
received, stating Bayfield could
not be included in this year's
budget, but that the request
would be kept on file. There
was also a letter from Ministry
of Treasury re: drainage assess-
ments on provincially owned
property. An invitation to at-
tend a meeting of the Associat-
ion of Municipalities of Ontario
was received and some council
members will attend on May
