HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1974-03-21, Page 4PAGE 4 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1974 FIRE DESTROYS ABBATOIR - Fire of undetermined origin early Tuesday morning completely demolished the large abbatoir and store owned by Ron Merrier, just north of Dashwood. The alarm was turned in around five o'clock, and despite prompt action by the Dashwood fire brigade the entire roof and interior of the building were completely wiped out. As well as the entire stock of food products in the store, at least 25 carcasses of beef and several slaughtered pigs were lost. All that remains of the building are the charred walls. Mr. Merner, the owner of the establishment, is holidaying in Puerto Rico and was not able to be contacted at the time of the fire. MEAT DESTROYED - An estimated 25 carcasses of beef, as well as a quantity of pork, were completely destroyed in the fire at Merner's Abbatoir early Tuesday morning. The firm does a considerable amount of custom work as well as all their own slaughtering. Bayfield council (by Milvena Erickson) At the regular meeting of Bayfield village council Mon- day evening, several petitioners were present and Mr. Woodcock asked for the use of a spot on the south side of the river near the Carson -Elliott Marina to dock their house boat. This was denied. Don Bell, Keith Bunn and Tony Hutchings requested coun- cil to ask an adjoining property owner to remove some derelict vehicles, etc. Council will dis- cuss the matter with the property owner in question. Members of council stated they would attend the Tucker - smith Telephone annual meeting to be held in Brucefield in the LOOF Hall on Wednesday, March 20. A letter received from Mrs. Joan Buller requesting permis- sion to open a gift shop in her home for the summer months is to be answered. Since the Sullen property is zoned residential, she must apply for re -zoning. A letter from the LCBO answ- ering a request from the village in regards to a liquor store was received, stating Bayfield could not be included in this year's budget, but that the request would be kept on file. There was also a letter from Ministry of Treasury re: drainage assess- ments on provincially owned property. UNIT II Unit II of Hensall United Church held their March meet- ing at the church recently. Kay Mock presided and opened the meeting with a spring poem "Prelude." Pat Venner gave the devotional on "Belief" using scripture from John Followed by prayer. Mrs. Mock read the "Parable of the Tibbler" which was prep- ared by Hilda Payne. The roll call was answered by a favour- ite bird call. Grace Drummond conducted the business which consisted of announcing the general meeting planned in October with Jape Davidson of Brucefield to be guest speaker. A meeting is planned at Northside United Church in Seaforth on March 27 concerning alcohol problems. Mona Alderdice gave the topic for the evening. It was taken from the Huron Expositor. It dealt with Jerry Banns work with the CUSO in Nigeria. He studied their agricultural habits and living conditions. He help- ed them with their agricultural problems and promoted working tools and animal labour. The meeting closed with a hymn and the mizpah benedict- ion.
