Zurich Firers win two; lead
series with Centralia College
After trailing their best -of -
seven playoff series with Cent-
ralia College by one game last
week, the Zurich Flyers have
come back strong to win the
next two, and now hold a 3-2
lead in games. On Sunday aft-
ernoon the locals thumped the
College boys 13-2 in the Zurich
Arena, and then on Tuesday
night they came through with a
thrilling 5-4 overtime victory
in the local arena.
The Sixth game in the series
will be played tonight, Thurs-
day, in the Huron Park Arena,

Anna Lee Stevenson, a Grade
10 student at Seaforth District
High School, won over eight
other contestants in the public
speaking contest in Clinton
Wednesday night sponsored by
the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows and the Rebekah Lodges
of Huron District.
Anna Lee, the fifteen year-
old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Stuart Stevenson of R, R.2,
Brussels, spoke on the Child
Abusers in her prepared speech
and on friends in her impromptu
speech.
The runner-up was Kathy
DeJong, 15, of Centralia, a
grade 11 student at South Huron
Secondary School, in Exeter.
Her subject was Value of Grass,
and Ladders for her impromptu
speech.
Other contestants were Don
Melady, R.R.2, Dublin, a
Grade 10 student at Seaforth
District High School; Barbara
Ratz, R,R.3, Dashwood, A
grade 11 student at South Huron
Secondary School; Ernest Mc-
Millan, Goderich, a Grade 11
student at Goderich District
High School. Cathy Madill,
Blyth, a Grade 10 student at
Central Huron Secondary School
Clinton; Larry York, Bayfield,
a Grade 10 student at Central
Huron Secondary School; Flora
Nabrotzky, Teeswater, a
Grade 11 student at F.E. Mad-
ill Secondary School, Wingham
and Barbara Ryan, R.R.1, Blue -
vale, a Grade 10 student at
F.A. Madill Secondary School,
Wingharn.
Anna Lee Stevenson, by win-
ning first place, will be one
of 30 high school students from
across Ontario who will spend
a two-week holiday in July
visiting New York and the
United Nations, Gettysburg,
and Washington, and Montreal
and Granby, in Quebec. Stud-
ents from the other provinces
of Canada and across the United
States participate in similar
programs.
The judges were Rev. John
Oestreicher, of Clinton, Mrs.
Margaret Robinson, of Zurich
and John Boyne, of Listowel.
Alex Meikle, of Exeter,
Huron District Deputy Grand
Master of District No 8, IOOF,
was chairman for the evening.
Zurich Atoms
lose series

The Zurich Atoms gave up a
close 2-0 loss to Mitchell last
Wednesday night in the local
arena.
There was no scoring during
the first and second periods
due to fine performances from
both goaltenders.
Mitchell's goals were scored
by John White and Jim McIver.
Mitchell now advances to the
Zone 1 final series, against
Goderich.

in Zurich on Sunday afternoon.
Winner of this series will play
off with the winner of the
Shipka-Huron Park series for the
South Huron League cliampion-
ship.
Ron Desjardine emerged as
the hero in the Tuesday night
game, when he banged in a
pass from Pat Bedard at the 1.3E
marl< in the overtime session. •
Centralia took a 2-1 lead in the
first period on goals by Charles
Bauman and Doug Humphrey,
while Rich Schilbe registered
for the locals.
Another goal by Schilbe
early in the second period tied
the score at 2-2 and before the
session ended Brian Campbell
shot Zurich into a 3-2 lead.
Early in the third period
Bryan Bedour brought the Coll-
ege right back into the game
when he scored unassisted, but
two minutes later Kevin Mc-
Kinnon scored for the locals to
give them a 4-3 lead. Midway
through the session Bauman
scored his second goal of the
night for Centralia to tie the
count at 4-4.
At 1,36 of the overtime per-
iod Desjardine rifled in the pass
from Bedard to salt away the
victory for the Flyers.
A total of six minor penalties
and one major were called
against the Zurich crew, while
the College were assessed eight
minors and a major.
On Sunday afternoon the
locals scored four goals in the
first period, added five more
in the second and then came
up with four more in the third.
Centralia picked up their only
two goals of the game in the
second period.
Pat Bedard sparked the attack
for Zurich banging in five big
goals, while Rich Schilbe added
three to the cause. Ron Desjard-
ine flashed the red light twice,
while Ron Rader, Kevin Mc-
Kinnon and Bob Merner all
scored once,

show well
in competition
The month of February has
been a busy month of practising
and actual competition for
some local Y.B,C, (Youth
Bowling Council) youngsters.
On Sunday, February 17 the
Zone Championship was held
in Goderich. Louise Regier
of Zurich placed eighth, bowl-
ing 373 for Bantam girls single;
and Jim Dietrich of Zurich
placed fourth, 543 for bantam
boy's single. Sunday evening,
the zone finals for the seniors
was held at the Zurich Lanes.
Winners of the senior boys
singles were, Clinton, Bev
Bromley triple 740; Kincardine,
Brian MacKay, 739; Zurich,
Gary Rau, 718; Owen Sound,
Walt Breadner 667; Wingham,
Terry Salhauer 623; Listowel,
Doug Clark, 548; Walkerton,
Bob Newton, 556; Collingwood,
Kevin Smith, 527.
The Zurich senior boys placed
fourth from these same lanes.
On Sunday, February 24,
the Championship was held in
Owen Sound for the juniors.
Barb Bleck of Zurich placed
sixth (505) for the junior girls
single and Rick Bedard placed
second (601) for the boy's single.

A total of 14 minor penalties
seven to each team, and two
majors, one to each team,
were handed out in the game.
