Flyers finally beat Shipka
The Zurich Flyers finally
broke the jinx over them held
by the Shipka Bears and beat
them 5-3 in the local arena
Friday night. It was the first
time this season that the Flyers
managed to defeat the first -
place Shipka crew.
With less than a minute left
to play the referees called the
game off when a major donny-
brook threatened to erupt. The
game was a rough and tumble
affair throughout with a total of
23 penalties being handed out.
Ron Corriveau shot the Flyers
into a 1-0 lead midway through
the first period, when he capit-
alized on a pass from Pat Bedard
and Ron Desjardine.
Jim Ramer gave the local
crew a 2-0 lead early in the
second period, before Dennis
Morrissey came back with a
counter for the Shipka crew.
Another goal by Ron Corriveau
at the 5.41 mark gave Zurich
their same two goal lead. Two
minutes later Paul Corriveau
flashed the red light for the
locals to give them a 4-1 lead,
but Barry Clarke retaliated for
the Bears midway through the
stanza.
At the 6.27 mark of the third
period the Shipka crew came
back strong and a goal by Jack
Stanlake brought them within
one marker of tieing the score.
A goal by Richard Schilbe,
however, midway through the
final session proved to be the
clincher as the Bears failed to
beat Glen Gascho for the bal-
ance of the game.
In the penalty department the
Bears came out second best as
well, picking up a total of 10
minors, two majors and two
Barrie misconducts. The Zurich
crew were tagged with seven
minors and two majors.
On Sunday afternoon the
Flyers played host to the Huron
Park squad in an abbreviated
game called near the end of the
second period due to hydro
failure. The score was 9-3 for
the locals when the game was
called.
Oddly enough the visitors,
took an early 2-0 lead before

The Grand Bend goals were
scored by Trevor Kobe and
Frank Kelders. Only three pen-
alties were handed out in the
game, with two of them going
to Zurich and one to Grand Bend.
In the second game of the
series Steven Grainger led the
attack with three big goals,
while Grant Love chipped in with
two. Single markers came off
the sticks of Ken Oesch, Len.
VanWonderen and Tom Cyr.

was scored by Trevor Kobe.

the entire game, and it went to
the local squad.
Last week in regular league
play the Zurich Peewees swamp-
ed Hensall 7-2 after allowing
them to score the first two goals
of the game. Theo Williams
and Dennis Parsons both scored
for Hensall in the first period,
before the Zurich crew came to
life and pumped in seven
straight goals.
Marksmen for the locals were
Len VanWonderen with two and
Grant Love, Robert Smith, Ken
Oesch, Jeff McKinnon and
Barry Overholt.
Six penalties were called in
the game with four of them
going to Hensall and two to

the Flyers found their scoring
range. Before the period ended
Ron Desjardine had triggered
a hat trick, and Ron Rader and
Richard Schilbe had both scored
once.
In the second period Schilbe
banged in his second goal of the
game, and Rader blind the
red light twice more for a hat
trick. Pat Bedard scored the
ninth goal for the Zurich squad.
In sharp contest to the Friday
night game, only one minor
penalty was called in the two
periods played.
Tonight, Thursday, the local
crew play Arkona on their home
ice, and then on Sunday after-
noon they play host to the same

RECREATION TIPS
Safe snowmobiling depends
upon the operator's knowledge
of how and where to use his
machine with a minimum of
accident risk. For example,
most of the fatal snowmobile .
accidents in Ontario occur on
public thoroughfares and ice
covered lakes and rivers.
Then there is the important
matter of a snowmobiler's legal
responsibilities, a knowledge
of provincial and municipal
laws and requiring insurance
coverage.
