Mr. E. Koehler, manager of the skating rink in Zurich, is confined to his bed with an extremely sore throat. His posit- ion is being filled by Ed Miller. Three new members, Henry Eickmeier, W.S. Johnston and D. Staubus have been added to the teaching staff of the Lutheran Sunday School in Zurich. George Hanley was re-elected as reeve of Stanley Township by acclamation at the nominat- ion meeting held on Monday. Fred Bengough has been award- ed the position of caretaking for the school in Hensall. Donald MacKinnon, of Crom- arty, who has been learning the barber trade with the men in Hensall, has accepted a position in Detroit and left for there. Mr. F.C. Kalbfleisch is at present operating his flax mill at full capacity and this supply- ing work for a large number of residents of Zurich and area. Mr. Alex Voisin is contemplat- ing the starting of a route in Zurich for milk, cream and other dairy products, daily. 35 Years. Ago Salaries for vaious Hay town- ship officials were set at the first meeting of the council for the year. Clerk -treasurer will receive $360 and $350 for the telephone, along with $20 for roads; the assessor will receive $100; the road superintendent will be paid 30 cents per hour. The community was sadden- ed last week at the sudden pass- ing of Mr. John McKinley, a prominent resident of Stanley Township for many years. He was 75 years old. At the annual meeting of the Hensall Public School board, Alfred Clark was named chair- man, and A.L. Case was appoin• ted secretary -treasurer. The three new members of the police village trustees in Zurich, Ivan Yungblut, Theod- ore Haberer and Leroy O'Brien, were given their oaths of office on Monday. James Parkins, of Ailsa Craig has taken a position as a motor mechanic in the Zurich Garage, owned by Herb Mousseau. Par- ents would be well advised to drive their children to school until the monsters have been done away with. Jack Tudor was elected as president of the Hensall Can- adian Legion, when that organ- ization held their annual meet- ing recently. The price of milk throughout this area has been increased to 16 cents a quart, effective at once. A prominent citizen of Zurich for many years, Mr. Joseph Gascho passed away at his home on Sunday morning, in his 89th year. A big wolf was shot on Satur- day afternoon, in the big swamp on highway 84, by a lucky hunt- er from Detroit. About 25 hunt- ers were taking part in the hunt. Dr, and Mrs. W.B. Coxon, accompanied by Dr. and Mrs. E. Steiner, of Exeter, have returned home following the annual convention of the Ontario Veterinary Association in Hamil- ton. 10 Years Ago The site for the proposed new Hay Township School area cent- ral school is still unsettled, even though the board, along with councils of Hay, and the village of Zurich agreed on location at a meeting last Thursday night. Dial Telephone service will be introduced in Hensall late in 1964, W.W. Haysom, -Bell Telephone manager for this area, announced this week. Plans are under way by the Zurich Agricultural Society to observe the 100th centennial of the Zurich Fall Fair this year. Huron County Council hears of the need for a new jail to replace the present one. The jail was built in 1840, and orig- inally served two other counties- of ountiesof the Huron Tract - Bruce and Perth. Thus it is 14 years older than the original courthouse completed in 1854. An expression of opinion req- uested by Stanley Township ratepayers on Monday night, showed a great majority of those present favored the building of a central school to serve the needs of public school pupils in the township..
