approval.
The Executive Committee
would be able to appoint mem-
bers to Standing Committees of
Special Committees in the .
event of a member resigning or
in the case of a member's
death. -
Cecil Desjardine, Executive
Committee chairman, said that
his group did not want to take
that responsibility.
Special committee members
receive extra pay. Matters con-
cerning money should come
before the council as a whole.
The executive committee also
recommended to council that a
special committee be formed
annually to review and consider
salaries of department heads.
The warden would be chairman
of this committee.
In making salary recomendat-
ions, the committee would pres-
ent its reports to the council as
a whole.
The report also called on
Huron County to support a resol-
ution from the County of Lanark
that the provincial and federal
governments guarantee adequate
supplies of newsprint for week-
ly newspapers in Ontario.
The resolution stated that
weekly newspapers are consider-
ed "an integral and essential
part of cultural, business and
municipal affairs."

Huron discuss chance
of n, ,, fire s,
; tem
Discussion of a possible
Huron County central fire brig-
ade dispatching office dominat-
ed the Huron County Council
meeting ori Wednesday, January
9. .
While some council members
objected to certain aspects of
the system, most werein agree-
ment that a feasibility study be
requested through the Ontario
Fire Marshall's office.
The study would cost the
county nothing.
The Development Committee,
chaired by Allan Campbell,
made the recommendation in
its report to council.
Although no date has been set
for the study, the recommend-
ation along with the rest of the
committee's report was accepted
during the meeting.
In presenting his committee's
report suggesting the dispatch-
ing system, Mr. Campbell said
he hoped for discussion and
questions about it. His hopes
were fulfilled.
The issue raised by some
councillors was that it would tak(
two calls to get a fire truck to
a fire, one to the dispatcher
and another from the dispatcher
to the fire brigade closest to
the scene.
One council member termed
such a system as "cumberson
ridiculous."
Another member felt that the
recommendation put "the cart
ahead of the horse."
" We're talking about dispatch-
ing but we're dispatching what?"
he explained.
All aread of the county do
not have equal fire fighting
equipment." Until fire areas
are pr,.perly defined and get
equal equipment and protection
the expense wasn't justified, "
he said.
The fact that few fire brigade
Board of Education
pick committees.
(by Wilma Oke)
Following the ratification of
the re-election of E.C. Hill
as chairman of the Huron
County Board of Education for
1974, and Wilfred Shortreed as
vice-chairman, the report of
the steering committee was
approved with the result the
Education Committee will be
composed of: John Westbrook,
R.R,2, Clinton; John Broadfoot,
R.R.1, Brucefield; Herb Turk-
heim, Zurich; Ken Cooke,
Clinton; Donald McDonald,
R.R.2, Brussels; Mrs. Molly
Kunder, Seaforth; and John
Henderson, R.R.5, Seaforth.
The Management Committee
will be composed of: Mrs.
Marian Zinn, R.R.2, Lucknow;
Alex Corrigan, R.R.1, Bluevale;
Charles Rau, R.R.2, Zurich;
Harry Mayter, R.R.2, Dashwood
Mrs, Dorothy Wallace, Goder-
ich; Clarence McDonald,
Exeter; and Jack Alexander,
Wingham.
Following meetings of the
members of the Education Com-
mittee and the Management
Committee, Herb Turkheim was
elected chairman of the Educ-
ation Committee, and Mrs.
Kunder, vice-chairman; while
Alex Corrigan was elected
chairman of the Managen.ent
Committee and Clarence Mc-
Donald, vice-chairman.
Meeting in committee of the
whole the Board discussed the
absence of the secondary school
teachers in Huron, who joined
thousands of teachers across the
province on December 18 who
stayed away from school to prot-
est against government legislat-
ion which would invalidate the
resignations of 7, 800 teachers
trying to hasten salary negotiat-
ions and order compulsory arbit-
ration.
Following the discussion the
trustees decided that any secon-
dary school teacher not at school
on December 18 will lose a day's
pay.
in the county have trucks equip-
ped with two -way radios was
another objection put forth.
Mr. Campbell explained that
by having one central dispatcher
municipalities in the county
could save money. The service
would not be duplicated. Three
dispatchers could be hired to
man a central telephone 24
hours a day.
The telephone would have a
Zenith number so that no long
distance calls would be neces-
sary anywhere in the county.
Another benefit of the system
would be that in case of fire
was too much for one brigade to
handle, it could call back to
the dispatcher who would send
other brigade to help.
Citing the case of massive
disaster such as the gas explos-
ions in London, one council
member said that it made sense
to tie county fire brigade as
together with a central dispat-
cher, as a similar disaster might
occur in Huron County.
