The resolution, sponsored by Phil Durand of Zurich, dealt with the tariff of eight cents on the import of corn from the United States and the govern- ment's contemplation of its rem- oval. The resolution said that U.S. growers are being subsidiz- by their own government and removal of the tarriff would give them an unfair advantage in the Canadian marketplace. It urged that the tarriff not only be ret- ained, but increased to 25¢. The resolution immediately ran into flack from livestock lyth man wins point Adrian Vos, of Blyth won sup- port from the Ontario Federat- ion of Agriculture last Tuesday for his call for more government assistance in researching a poss- ible solution to the energy crisis. Mr. Vos proposed a resolution at the annual meeting of the OFA which called for the govern• ments of Canada and Ontario to put more research funds behind a drive to recover methane gas from the farm -yard manure pile. Mr. Vos said the methane, a form of natural gas, might in future meet up to one third of gas requirements in Canada, a figure that corresponds with the amount of the nation's gas consumption that is used by farmers. Mr. Vos said this was no new idea, that the technology is already known. He said that in Australia and Taiwan the process is already used and there were some 1000 such operations in France during World War II. "To be used in Canada under our climate conditions, however, he said, "more research must be done." He was backed in his resolut- ion by Gordon Hunsberger of Waterloo County who told the 400 delegates from across the province meeting at the Oshawa Holiday Inn that much research into the project has been going on at the University of Waterloo. He said the university is ready to proceed with a practical proj- ect at present but needs about $100, 000 to undertake this step. Mr. Hunsberger explained that after the gas is recovered from the manure an odourless residue is left which is still a valuable fertilizer. Another interested observer on the subject was Donald Mac- Donald, former leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and a member of the Provincial Legislature. He told members of the press that there is a trem- endous potential in gas recovery from animal wastes which could make a difference in future energy requirements. It was appointed out, however, that if the price wasn't right the corngrower would feed his crop to livestock, thus producing an oversupply of livestock and hurt- ing the livestock producer. The resolution passed with a surprising majority considering the fact that the majority of far- mers present were livestock prod- ucers. One delegate felt this was a good omen in that one produc- er recognizes the right of anoth- er to a fair price even if it hurts himself a little. Another resolution, this one from Peel County caused a stir before it was overwhelmingly approved. It called on govern- ments to put an immediate mor- atorium on sales of land in Ont- ario to persons other than Can- adians or landed immigrants. The resolution noted that many of the persons engaged in speculation in the province are non -Canadians who are driving prices up and taking their profits out of the country. The resolut- ion was greeted by some opposit- ion that it was too strong and an attempt was made to have it sent back to the resolution corn- mittee for more study. OFA President, Gordon Hill, of Varna however, squelched the move 'by making a passionate plea to the delegates to vote one way or the other on the question since the resolution had already been referred to a committee once before. " Don't fob the decision off on someone else, " he said. "If we're going to have a land - use plan we're going to have to make a few unpleasant decisions, wling scores at Zurich Lanes LADIES BOWLING LEAGUE December 3, 1973 Alley Oops - Mary Laporte - 617 Happy Gang - Mary Orr - 517 Jolly Six - Wanda McClinchey - 647 Packers - Marg Clarke - 621 Slow Pokes - Marion Sullivan - 566 Starlites - Pauline Guenther - 621 Angels - Theresa Stark - 543 Town & Country Six - Shirley Pole - 650 Ups & Downs - Betty Grenier - 780 HIGH SINGLE - Nellie Trott - 346 HIGH TRIPLE - Betty Grenier - 780 HIGH AVERAGE - Mary Laporte - 199 SENIOR MEED BOWLING LEAGUE, Newcomers - D.
