News of Zurich Public School
Two years ago in grade five,
several students in Mr. Weido's
class at Zurich Public School
became interested in writing
novels after studying one novel
in class. After some discussion,
Heather Riddell, Elizabeth
Datars, Judy Gingericlr, and
Becky Turnbull, all started
their first novel. The ideas and
style of writing are entirely
their own.
As a consequence, several of
these novels will be published in
this paper. Judy Gingerich's
novel will be first with only one
chapter being placed in the pap-
er each week. Here is the first
chapter of Judy's novel.
THE SECRET HIDEOUT
Chapter I
"Going to the Lake"
"Come on Daddy, " said Jean,
"Let's go." Jean, Robby, and
Mr. and Mrs. Ruby were going
to the lake. They were going to
walk out on the dock and look
at the big ships in the harbour.
When they got there Robby said,
"I want to go into that big ship.'
"Me too" stated Jean.
"Why, you can't" said Mr. Rub}
"Why not?" inquired Jean.
"It's not open to the public. "
"To who?" asked Robby.
"To just anybody," said Mr.
Ruby.
Jean is five and Robbie was
six. They realized deep water
was dangerous but Jean really
found out what dangerous meant
later on. The family was walk-
ing along just watching what was
going on around them.
"What's that, Daddy." asked
Jean. She went to take a closer
look.
"I'11 be there in a minute, "
A quarter sparkling in the sun
had caught Jean's eye! A man
had dropped it and it was very
near the edge of the dock. She
FLOOR HOCKEY
On Friday, November 30, the
floor hockey tournament was
held at South Huron District
High School in Exeter. The
schools participating had very
good teams.
The puck used for the tourna-
ment was made of sponge rubber
and was bigger than the usual
size puck.
We didn't succeed in bringing
home the trophy, but we put up
•a good effort.
The goal scorers on our team
were Roger O'Brien in the first
game and Wayne Thiel in the
second game.
The players on the Zurich
team were Jack Forrester and
Larry Pole in goal; Glenn Zirk,
Kevin Wildfong, Raye Widrick
and Jeff Forrester on defence;
the centres were Paul Haggitt,
Jim Oesch and Roger O'Brien.
The left wingers were Wayne
Thiel, Tim Hamather, and Ken
Oesch. The right wingers were
Grant Love, Bill Pole and Dave

TAKES PART IN TOURNAMENT
On Friday, November 30, the
girls and boys hockey teams of
Zurich Public School took part
in a floor hockey tournament at
the South Huron District High
School. The girls played three
games and were defeated in all
three. Against McCurdy the
score was 2-1; Darlene Oesch
scoring the only goal. Next we
played against Stephen, the
score being 3-1. Jullie Brown
scored the goal. The last game
was very close against Precious
Blood. With 20 seconds to go
in the game, they scored the
goal so the score was 1-0.

A WINTER POEM
(by Elizabeth Datars)
When I woke up one autumn
morn
I looked, and had to look once
more,
For during the night a blanket
of snow
Had fallen, and it seemed to
glow.
Snowflakes fell like crystals
down to the ground
To cover the earth,
And while they floated with
rythm and ryme,
I heard the shrieking call of a
jay.
And as the end of the day was
near,
The snow glistened like a
million sparkling diamonds.
I knew in my heart that they
would melt away,
But oh, not now!
Stay awhile, please!

Of course you dim your lights
for other drivers, but what
about pedestrians, asks the On-
tario Safety League? They can
see better when your lights are
on lower beam, and there's Less
chance they'll be blinded into a
hazardous act. Give pedestrians
the same break you give the
vehicles you meet.
In addition to trees available
from lots within the commun-
ity, a number of Christmas tree
producers operate their plant-
ations as "cut -you -own." Trees
available for sale are marked
out so, you and your family can
pick out the tree you want.
in. She bobbed up to the surface.
A man in a motor boat saw her
hll in. Another person on the
dock saw her fall in and went to
call an ambulance.
"Daddy, Daddy, " yelled Rob-
by;
"What's wrong?" asked Mr.
Ruby.
"She fellin!"
"Who did?"
"Jean!" screamed Robby who
was terrified.
Father, Robby and mother who
were close by who had heard
them, ran to the end of the dock
after Robby. The person who had
been sitting in the boat could
swim so he jumped in after Jean.
The driver of the boat was the
only person left in the motor
boat so he told them what had
happened.

THE BIG MISTAKE!
(by Grant Love)
Winter time is a happy time,
Instead of all that dirt and
grime.
It's not the horse and sleigh
any more,
It's the sound of a Moto Scrap
roar.
Up to me it came with a
"crash -bang -bide,"
And asked me if I wanted to
ride.
Over the roar of the engine
"Sure I cried.
The seat was hard, the engine
was loud.
When we took off, we left a
big cloud!
Out we went over a field of
clover,
Boy! was I glad when that
dream was over!
The nice thing about dictating
letters is that you can use a lot
of words you don't know how to
spell.
