Grand Ben.:
studies report
on erosion
After listening to a report
from Roger Letham, a consult-
ing engineer, Grand Bend coun-
cil decided to go ahead with a
more extensive study to stop the
erosion of properties along Lake
Huron.
Under a new provincial Shore-
line Protection Act, the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources
takes care of all costs of surveys
for this type of erosion control.
Monies to cover the cost of
erosion control are also avail-
able on a loan basis from the
province with an interest rate of
eight per cent per annum.
Two property owners with land
on each side of the road allow-
ance of an extension of Lake
road asked that the village give
approval and also participate in
the scheme by protecting the
road allowance purported to be
owned by the village.
Mrs. E.L. Hodgins and Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Putherbough told
council immediate action must
be taken to save their properties
from further erosion.
Mrs. Hodgins said if steps are
not taken quickly she would be
forced to move her cottage back
from the bank.
She asked the engineer if any
immediate steps could be taken
to alleviate the situation. Leth-
am said broken concrete would
offer some assistance for the
time being.
In his preliminary report,
Letham suggested sheetpile
groynes be built for a distance
of at least 75 feet long with a
sea wall.
In answer to a question from
council regarding the use of
gabion baskets, Letham said he
felt sheet pile would be more
effective.
He continued, "to the• south
of the area in question a system
of groynes constructed from
stone filled gabion baskets has
been installed and some owners
have a bank protection wall.
This system appears to be work-
ing well, although in our opin-
ion gabion baskets do have a
tendency to settle in the sand
due to the undermining effect
of the wave action.

Friday night when they bowed
10-7 to last year's champions,
the Shipka Bears, in South Huron
Hockey League action. The
game was played in the local
arena.
Both teams scored twice in the
first period, with Larry Laye

the Bears, and Jim Ramer and

tie. Bill Hoffman, John Becker
and Jim Guenther found the
range for the Bears, while Ranier
and Schilbe both scored their
second goal 'cif the game, and
Bob Merner added the extra
marker for Zurich.
Four unanswered goals in the
first 15 minutes of the third per-
iod proved to be the big differ-
ence in the game, as Shipka
got markers from John Becker,
Dennis Morrissey, 13111 Hoffman
and Gordon Vincent, in that
order. Richard Fisher blinked
the red light for the Flyers, only
to have Danny Dalton come right
back with the 10th goal of the
game for Shipka. With less than
a minute to play in the game
Kecin McKinnon rifled in the
seventh goal for the Zurich crew.
A total of 24 penalties were

Despite a report last week
that the postal department would
accept sealed Christmas card
envelopes at the six cent unseal-
ed rate, this is not the situation,
according to local postmaster
Murry McAdams. Mr. Mc-
Adams told the Citizens News
that he had been advised by the
director of the postal region
that this situation does not exist.
The postmaster said he was
advised that although a study is
being conducted presently to
review regulations in connect-
ion with mechanizing postal
operations, the present policies
still apply.
This means that all sealed
Christmas card envelopes
must carry an eight cent stamp,
while unsealed greeting cards
may be mailed at the six cent
rate.
