THE SECRET HIDEOUT
CHAPTER II
IN THE 11OSPITAL
(by Judy Gingerich)
Jean was getting a free ride
although she didn't know where
she was. When she opened her
eyes she was frightened and
astonished at the same time.
"Where am I?" asked Jean.
"You're in the hospital, "
said her father.
Jean looked around herself.
Two doctors and a nurse were
pushing her stretcher down the
hall to her room. Her mother
and father were walling with
her also.
When they went in the door
Jean had another surprise. The
room was very large. There were
six beds in the room, and three
children filled three of them.
The nurse helped her into her
bed. The sheets of her bed were
nice and cool. She was very
clumsy because she had a cast
on her leg.
"Why do I have a cast on my
leg? Did I break it?"
"Yes, " replied her mother.
"How? Where? When? asked
Jean. Faintly she remembered
walking out on the dock. Then

she remembered grabbing for
the quarter and tripping over
a large stone.
After a long talk, her parents
had to leave. A nurse came in
and told Jean she needed a rest.
So Jean went to sleep. While
she was sleeping she dreamed.

The first snowfall is the signal
for winter fun to snowmobile
enthusiasts, Ilowever, because
the machines are so mobile and
powerful, snowmobile operators
should be careful not to damage
plants and crops, says Burke
McNeill, a horticultural special-
ist with the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Snowmobiles may break
young trees and shrubs. Small
evergreen plantings, such as are
found in conservation areas, are
often covered by only a light
layer of snow --and are often
damaged by passing machines.
Operated on lawns, fields of
winter wheat or hay, especially
where snow cover is light, they
compact the snow, killing the
crop or sod.
Remember that if you do your
own servicing at home, fill the
machine on the driveway. Spill-
ed gas or oil will hill grass.
Enjoy the thrill of snowmobil-
ing, but drive carefully. Avoid
sites where trees, sod, and
crops are planted.

The parks division, ministry
of natural resources, has under-
taken a study concerning the
development of a province- wide
network of recreation trails,
the management of such a trail
system and the legislative issues
involved.
Christmas comes to Queen's
Park December 12 with the sett-
ing up of five large Austrian
pine supplied by the ministry of
natural resources. In the main
legislative building, one of the
15 -foot trees will be placed at
the Grand Staircase, a second in
St. Lawrence Hall (Ontario pub-
lic servants' lounge), and two
in the Lieutenant Governor's
Suite, together with a smaller
(8 -foot) Austrian pine. The
trees were grwon northwest of
Barrie in the Craighurst area.
