Currie, Parkhill) For some time I have been fascinated by the origin of place names in Ontario. Until recently Dashwood has stumped me. For a time I thought it might be connected with Dash- wood House which was the head office of the Grand Trunck Rail- way in London, England, during the last years of the nineteenth century. The defect in this explanation is that the Grand Trunk never reached Dashwood, Ontario. Incidentally Dashwood, House, which stood near the foot of Old Broad Street not, far from Liverpool Street Station in London's financial district, has just been torn down to make way for a huge, modern office -building. The land in the northern part of Western Ontario was once owned by the Canada Company Its first Governor, or president, OPEN DAILY BREAKFAST & LUNCH Mon. to Frl. 7:30 - 1:00 Sat. & Sun. 8:00 - 1:00 DINNERS All week long - 5:30 - 8:00 You Are Always Welcome! Presumably Bosanquet wanted to honour his daughter and son-in-law by attaching their name to a new community. The word Dashwood is a short- ened form of the French word for "of' '(de) and the English ashel. wood . 1embers of the Board of Dir- ectors of the Canada Company gave their navies to several near- by townships; Bosanquet in Lamb - ton, Williams, McGillivray, and Biddulph in Middlesex, all those in Perth, and to Hullett, Stanley, Tuckersmith (Sir John a banker, wrote it as two words, Tucker Smith) and Usborne, in Huron. The Canada Company may have had trouble getting a grant of the large block of land from the British G overn- ment. At any rate Hay and Stephen were senior officials in the office of the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Stephen was the grandfather of Virginia Wolfe, a prominent English novelist, who died in 1942. 0 AUTOMOTIVE LEMONS All car buyers are potential "lemon" owners says Consumers' Association of Canada.
